Neat feature discovered in Garmin GPS

FWIW, my Dad is a complete nut about gadgets and, specifically, gadgets that help you to navigate. He's the only person I know who owns THREE sextants, an astrolabe, at least two GPS receivers, a cross-staff and any number of compasses and time pieces.

Anyway, Sunday we were seeding parts of the pastures at BHF for winter forage and he asked how large was the particular plot we were seeding. I replied that I wasn't positive but my best educated guess was approximately 6ac. His reply was that he didn't think it was nearly that big to which I replied: prove it otherwise.

After a while he returns, and proceeds to drive around the perimeter of the plot I was currently working in. I notice that he's driving with his hand-held GPS stuck out the side of the Mule too...

Pretty soon, he drives up and asks if I have any idea how big this plot is and I reply: "About three and a half acres." He looks at the GPS and reports to me that it is actually 3.33585 ac.

Apparently, all along he's owned a Garmin GPS that had an area calculating function. Very cool.

Yeah, the guy that farms my dad's farm goes out on a 4-wheeler and does an area calc prior to mixing fertilizer, ect....

That's pretty cool. :)
