Cosby Settles Lawsuit in Assault Case
By MARYCLAIRE DALE
Associated Press Writer

November 8, 2006, 9:17 PM EST

PHILADELPHIA -- Bill Cosby settled a lawsuit Wednesday with a woman who said the entertainer drugged and sexually assaulted her at his home outside Philadelphia.

Terms of the settlement will remain confidential, according to a one-paragraph statement released jointly by both sides. "(The plaintiff) and Mr. Cosby have resolved their differences," the statement said.

Cosby's publicist, David Brokaw, said there would be no further comment. A telephone number for the plaintiff could not be determined Wednesday and she could not be reached for comment. Her lawyer, Delores M. Troiani, declined further comment.

The woman claimed that Cosby, 69, assaulted her at his mansion in Cheltenham in early 2004 after giving her pills. Attorneys for Cosby say the comedian gave the woman Benadryl after she complained of stress and sleeping problems.

The federal judge presiding over the case earlier denied Cosby's request for a gag order and the plaintiff's request to shield the names of a dozen other women who say Cosby assaulted them. Some of the accusations raised by the other women go back for decades, and none have pending lawsuits filed against him.

The plaintiff, a native of Ontario, Canada, who is in her 30s, previously worked at Temple University in Philadelphia, which touts Cosby as a trustee and one of its most famous alumni. She is identified in court documents, but The Associated Press does not publish names of alleged sexual assault victims without their consent.

The woman, who called Cosby a friend and mentor, went to police about a year after the encounter, but Montgomery County prosecutors declined to file criminal charges. She then filed a lawsuit.

Cosby, best known as a warm, funny TV dad on "The Cosby Show," has sparked debate with blunt remarks on personal responsibility aimed at the black community. In 1997, the year his son Ennis was murdered, the long-married Cosby acknowledged a brief affair with the mother of Autumn Jackson, a young woman convicted of extorting money from him.

The woman said Cosby had given her three blue pills that rendered her semiconscious, and then molested her. She said she awoke to find her bra undone and her clothes in disarray.

Cosby, in his legal filings, denied the assault and said he made the woman breakfast the next morning. He described them as social friends who sometimes had dinner together, alone or with others.

"Plaintiff and he discussed many topics, including basketball, plaintiff's career and personal development, job opportunities, and plaintiff's spiritual beliefs," Cosby said in his answer to the lawsuit.

The accuser also sought damages for defamation after Cosby's representatives allegedly suggested that her family had asked him for money before going to police.

Temple has no plans to distant itself from Cosby over the assault allegations or the settlement, spokesman Ray Betzner said Wednesday. Cosby, a trustee since 1982, has four years remaining on his current term.

It has been going on for decades according to the article. Not a "lately" thing.

Lots of people have sons murdered. An excuse but not really a reason.

As a broken record, I reiterate, you don't have kids. BC can chime in now with his holier than thou reiteration of the consistency of your logic(don't know if he has kids), and we can all fly to Ixtapa tomorrow for a long weekend and forgettabouttit. Or at least I will.

Maybe I should have had kids. Then I can have excuses for everything I do that is wrong. Kids or no kids it has NOTHING to do with the fact that I decide on something and I don't change it just because it now is against me. When I was an immigrant seeking citizenship, it would be nice if they just opened the doors and let everyone in. However, I realized that wasn't a good idea at all. I never rooted for easier entry into the USA. I didn't then and I don't now even when it would have made my life easier then. I understood that things needed to be the way they were because they don't want to allow undesirables into the country and that was that. As a H1 visa holder, I understood that the country needed to make sure it wouldn't take away jobs and I understood that they needed to make me post my job in a public place for 10 working days. I understood why they had all the hoops for me to jump thru then and I did support it then. Now that I am past the hoops, I still support them because I thought then that they were a good idea and I still do. I didn't change my stand because I was going thru it then and now I am not. BTW, naturalization has been my goal for 30 years so it wasn't just something I thought up to do because the sun was shining.

So yes, while I don't have kids, I really don't see how that changes anything. I make it a policy not to flip-flop just because now the deck is stacked against me and at the time it wasn't. Is that what parents do? They support or are against one thing in the past but now that they are parents and it makes their lives more difficult they change their opinion?

Well, it is not what you have so it is ****ed up as far as you are concerned. I suppose I should change my opinion so it matches yours and it won't be ****ed up? I base it off what I interpret the situation to be. Now if that sitiation changes and I see it, yes, I will change my opinions. However, that is different from changing opinions just because MY situation changes.

If parents change their mind every time their personal situation changes like you seem to imply and that having children is an excuse, I guess I am glad I made the decision long ago not to be a parent. IOW, if you are the typical parent, I am glad I am not. So, if you were the parent of Ed Gene (Sp) or Jeff Dahlmer, would you try tell us that killing is not so bad? Or what about theft? If your child steals would you change your mind about how bad theft is and water it down? How about lying? If your child lies, would lying be ok now that it is your child or do you take a firm stand? Please elaborate.

Or how about Bill Cosby's case? He had his son murdered so it is now an excuse for him to slip drugs in girl's drinks and and we non-parents cannot understand the anguish he goes thru. So, if someone molests your kids and he tells me that he was molested from young, should I let it go assuming it was my decision? Could it not be that he was just that way? Does it mean that if my wife dies tragically I get to do other bad things too or does it just involve kids?

Aklim, were you an orphan or something? I have never seen anyone with your mindset.

And nobody is using the drug thing as an excuse, personally I think it was a set up because he has been so outspoken against the NAACP and Jesse Jackson.

Nope. Yes, I had an average childhood, no better or worse than any other. I am an adult so it isn't my parent's fault as to what I do. My mindset is based off what I see is happening. When that changes and it is no longer applicable, my mindset changes. John doe thinks that the Red Sea and the Oceans should part because a parent is present and if they don't it is a tragedy of biblical proportions. I don't agree with that. But because I am not a parent, I cannot understand.

I don't know about it the drug being an excuse. T Walgamuth mentioned that having his son killed takes a lot out of him. I am saying it is a convenient excuse and it is NOT an acceptable one in my book. He has had a dozen or so women all accusing him of the same thing so if it is because of the NAACP and JJ, it is a very elaborate setup that spans decades.

Post *** A Little Song - A Little Dance... ***

We like our entertainers as...entertainers.

I don't like mine telling me what is wrong with the country. Barbra S., The Dixie Chicks, Charleton Heston, any of the "Xer" Generation Rap-Hip-Bop Artists...SHUT THE ***K UP!!!! Just sing - dance- spray that seltzer down your pants...but just SHUT UP!

But, here's the problem...

Ol' Bill has been around the block. He's seen things. He's done things. And I'm sure he'd love to take back ALOT of the things that he's done over the years. (Wouldn't we all?)

But, Bill seems to be the ONLY one, of his interest (PC?) that seems to WANT to stick his neck out and TRY TO CORRECT what he sees (and rightly so...) as a problem in the Black (American-Afro) Community. And his reward? The messenger is being killed. Let's trip down memory lane a bit...

Conservative Judge - Kinky "pube" on a Coke can? Who be 'dat?

"Borked?" And the "winner" (loser) was...?

An honest, MORAL, question of lifestyles and attitudes is met with vile, repulsive, dismissive indignation by the opposite side and if the oppinion is not "in lock-step" with the immoral majority, you're fonder for the "rumor-mill."

"Do you still beat your wife?" No "one-word" answer to that question. But, "one-word" answers are the only way that you'll be allowed to answer the accusations. That's all the "15-second soundbite" will allow.

And the real loser?

The mirror is in the other room.
