so perhaps they arent asking for many because they did cheat but just didnt buy enough votes to offset the groundswell of pissed off voters!

as for allen, i never had much use for him after the maccacca remark. i would have respected him a lot more if he had just admitted he knew he was insulting the guy and just said something like "of course i knew it was an insult...after what he said to me he had it coming".

now we can just sit back and see if we have given the dems an opportunity to make the country better or they will use it as just enough rope....to hang themselves.

i forgot the best part. in recent years an insider said indeed that was the reason he didnt ask for a recount.

I found a phrase that is prescient.

Bot

-----------------------

Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.), a Murtha supporter, said Monday night that Pelosi is playing for keeps.

“She will ensure that they [the Murtha camp] wins. This is hardball politics … We are entering an era where when the Speaker instructs you what to do, you do it,” he said. “Yes, she’s making calls to people. She is contacting people and letting them know that it’s an unequivocal letter.”

Hoyer’s camp was aware of the calls, said one lawmaker supporting the Democratic whip.

“She’s making calls, so don’t be shocked,” the lawmaker said.

Another House Democrat supporting Hoyer was incensed that Pelosi was exerting her influence in the caucus, asserting that it will further divide House Democrats.

It’s an incredible display of hubris,” the member said, using a phrase Pelosi herself sometimes employs. “It’s incredibly egotistical. We all got us here. We all got us to the promised land and Steny’s not going to the promised land?”

That's well put and I agree. I feel a bit chastized that I was fearful that the Repos would actually achieve majority control of all three branches for decades. Oh me of little faith, specially after all my intoning the 'time wounds all heels' bit.

On the unburdened by humility or grace bit, the same could be said of the early remarks on this thread about the Repos taking it like a man, unlike crybaby Gore and other Dems. Does anyone really believe that Allen would have conceded so quickly if Webb had held only a 65 vote advantage? And this is to say nothing about what Gore was looking at with Jeb and W having said more than once on the campaign trail that Jeb had assured Dubs that they had Florida.

If there have been any Demo victories this time around that went consistantly against exit polls, I haven't heard about it. If this had happened, the Repo victim would have been remiss to not make at least some sort of stink about it.

With all of the scandal surrounding various Repubs and the Mess O' Potamia gathering mass I would think a little contrition would be in order -- not some crowing about what a crybaby Gore was.

FWIW, I wish the Jefferson guy would get drummed out by the Dems. Doesn't smell too good.

After the first recount, Vern had 1 more vote not accounted for. Let's see about round 2.

I haven't followed that real close but it does look like some sort of serious machine error at the very least.

What was the margin of victory?

Pretty close, like 400 votes. Seems like now they are trying to decide the 18,000 who didn't vote, who would they have voted for???? Freaky, huh??

Yup. Looks the worst case scenario for 'no paper trail - computer' voting. I know how many times I've had a half a page or more of brilliantly written prose just vanish into the ether cause I did something wrong, or the computer did.

It's no stretch to imagine a whole pile of votes doing the same thing.

Might be a ray of hope for this new bunch yet. After electing Pelosi to be Speaker, they then turned around and basically told her to stuff it as far as Murtha was concerned, elected Hoyer to the #2 spot.

Looks like Nancy might be barking up the wrong tree if she thinks she's going to be the new "Hammer" with this group.

Who knows. Murtha's remarks do look a bit shakey on that tape; OTOH, he didn't take the money. He basically said he was humoring them in case they were actually going to invest real money in his district.

I've heard some accounts say that Nancy knew she didn't have the votes but was just making a statement. She and others believe Murtha had a lot to do with their taking the house back by having the balls to stand up and speak the truth as he saw it.

He strikes me as more the real deal than the guy Hoyer who got it but what do I know?

You're right there. He doesn't have one tenth the class and education of Al Gore.

Stuffed shirt pin-head more like it.

Allen can put on a dignified act when he wants to. He can even wipe his usual sneer off his face and act charming. But it is all an act -- just like his fake southside Virginia accent (the man is from California, for crissakes!), and his goddamn cowboy hat and boots and tobacco chewing. It is all a contrivance. Fundamentally, Allen is a win-at-all-costs partisan gutfighter -- and he has been for all of his political career. That's how he chose to act during this last election -- and it almost worked, in spite of all his screw-ups.

After watching this guy for years as a Virginia resident, I think that yesterday's speech shows that Allen is desparately trying to salvage his Presidential hopes -- and his "Hey, I'm not a sore loser" act yesterday was his opening gambit.

By the way -- if you listen closely, the concession speach was loaded with code words to the Religious Right. I think Allen is more or less jumping up and down and saying, "Don't desert me, guys! I am still your golden boy! Help! Help!"

Good riddance. Goodbye, Senator Dude Ranch.

Wouldn't have revived this thread but I missed this post back when.

Well spoken.

when you lose by one vote out of thousands you ask for a recount.

when you lose 65% to 35% you don't bother.
