Consumer reports nails mercedes again :(
Least reliable (Worst score first) Cadillac STS (V8) 2006 Mercees-Benz S-class Mercedes-Benz CLS* Mercedes-Benz E-class sedan BMW 7-series Jaguar S-type Least reliable (Worst score first) Pontiac Solstice* Mercedes-Benz SL Mercedes-Benz CLK Mercedes-Benz SLK (V6) Chevrolet Corvette Porshce 911 Carrera Ford Mustang (V6) Least reliable (Worst score first) Mercedes-Benz M-class* Land Rover LR3 (V8) Cadillac SRX (V8) Mercedes-Benz R-class* Volkswagen Touareg Jeep Grand Cherokee Hummer H3* 2006 BMW X5 (V8) Volvo XC90 (I6 and V8) Ford Explorer (V8) Mercury Mountaineer (V8) 2007 models unless otherwise noted. *Predicted reliability based on only one model year. European models scored the worse overall. I know the arguments. Benz buyers are most likely to complain, consumer reports sucks, yada yada yada...but yikes http://money.cnn.com/popups/2006/autos/reliable/index.html Last edited by yal; 11-11-2006 at 08:03 PM. Tell me....how is it that, statistical figures, taken from consumer feed back that add up to a 'better' 'worse' in percentages can be construed to be biased....would a teacher, marking work, also be considered biased if the people getting F, said it was biased based on their lousy performance. Or, could the team who always comes in last or nearly last in F1 also use that as an excuse, to claim they where really 1st but the way the scores are kept are biased against them ? Mercedes latest vehicles are an embarrassment...to them and the dealerships that have to deal with the customers who thought they'd got a reliable quality vehicle. .

Actually, in 1994 Consumer Reports tested mid-size sedans, and they rated a 300E their highest-rated car of all time (up to that point).
The reliability data is purely from reports of owners. I've filled out a few of those surveys myself.

Well good because I own a 1993 300e and a 2006 V6 mustang...so one out of two:

So what actually is the most reliable Mercedes, since say 1992?

It's worse than just that. It's a sample of CS subscribers who bother to return the rating for their car.

Naturally, those that do return the questionaire are motivated by something to do so - either because they are significantly elated*, or they want revenge for having something go wrong on a car that they spent $$$ money on.
*this way, they also get to "brag" about how great their car is, and give domestics a black eye.

At least GM takes the lead in the luxury car and sporty car areas. I thought the STS would have been ironed out by now. Isn't the solstice a Opel?

The individuals merely report issues with the vehicle. Their results may vary as compared to the general population, but, the relative percentages between vehicles will probably be similar. I value the statistics as provided by CR. What I question is their subjective evaluations of the vehicles. Here is where the bias of the driver will definitely come to bear. The driver should be escorted into the vehicle without being able to see it's moniker. All interior badging should be removed. Let the driver evaluate the vehicle without knowing, in advance, who the manufacturer is. Bet the results might be significantly different. |

Conspicuously absent in this thread are the members (with a few exceptions) bashing the domestic cars in the "all domestic cars suck" thread. Their silence is telling.

Let's imagine an example. Assume that CR subscribers are more likely to be tree-hugging, compost-mixing, goat-raising, pot-smoking back-to-the-land unreformed hippies than is found in the general population. Would their answers be the same as the larger population? I don't know. Why don't I know? Because I have no demographics to compare. Or there's a huge vat of millions and millions of marbles composed of thousands of different colors. Somebody hands me a jar of marbles and tells me, "These marbles came from the vat. The greatest number of marbles in the jar is yellow." I publish an article about marble colors and say, "Most of the marbles in the vat are yellow." |
