Thats a good site, but don't expect many replies here, I don't think there are many of us hunters here. A lot of people that would like to take our guns away from us though.

Hi Frank, I see you live in CA too; have you been doing any quail or chukar hunting this season? I've gone twice and had good hunts both times, saw lots of noth kinds, got lots of shots and missed a lot of birds!

My dogs do the hunting. I course jackrabbits with my Salukis. Most of the time we hunt where I work s it's just a quarter mile trip. We have a lot of Quail and some Dove.An outdoor writer came out to do an article on the dogs and after we were done running the dogs he had a great time calling the birds in.

I’m not sure if I was part of that dozen count or not. If not - Make that a dozen and one.

I’m also a “dem” as you put it. A “dem” (actually just more liberal than conservative on most issues) that enjoys shooting sports and many types of hunting that most of my fellow dem and repo friends alike enjoy. There are a few things that I do and don’t believe in regarding gun control. Discussion of them is akin to discussing any form of politics. We all know how that goes on this forum.

One thing I do know: It will be a cold day in hell when someone walks up to my door and walks away with any part of my sporting guns, or vintage collection. No matter what laws are passed, by any party.

There are gun control freaks and anti-hunting freaks everywhere. The dems streghthened there anti movement in the elections. This last year here in Cal. a dem helped us defeat an anti-coursing bill. There are pro-hunting dems out there, just not many.
Maybe I should have said 2 dozen :-)

Yep - There certainly are plenty anti-_____ freaks out there.

I’ll have to agree. Most of the anti-gun/hunt ones are far more often then not, liberals.

I don't condone hunting animals, but I would never impose my beliefs on your rights to hunt or own guns. I love animals in the wild, but I also believe in our individual freedoms to decide for ourselves what is right or wrong. Just don't hunt on my property and I'll mind my own business.

while we're at it, check out www.waterfowler.com and www.tidalfish.com. I do a lot of hunting with the editor of waterfowler.com and the forum is a great way to keep up with the migration because they use volunteer field reporters. tidalfish if it wasn't for the Florida forum, is almost as good as this one at providing helpful information.

I can respect that. However - Please feel free to impose what you want. They are your feelings on an important issue and should be heard; regardless of who has what rights. It’s not imposing - It’s open discussion.

As for your property - “No Hunting” is fine. But - I do suggest you get very involved with it. Get the local Parks and Wildlife folks involved with it. Manage it properly for the benefit of all that live upon it. It is incredible what the right folks can do for your property and wildlife on it, when properly managed. And by “properly managed” I do not mean hunting on it. Do let the authorities know that it is a No Hunting zone. This will help them in managing the wildlife populations that surround you as well as what ventures onto your property.

As for everyone else -

Personally (and I know not every hunter here will agree) - I feel that if you’re gong to hunt wild animals, do it with a mature attitude and respect for the animals. Don’t kill anything just because you can is my #1 rule. I feel trophy hunting is wrong. Canned hunts are wrong. Boxed hunts are wrong. Not eating what you shoot is wrong. Shooting more than the bag limit (regardless of eating it all) is wrong. Not quickly finishing off any suffering animal is wrong. Taking a shot with poor odds of taking the game is wrong. Practice shots on any animal is wrong. Pigeon hunts are wrong. Multiplying the individual bag limit by the number of hunters in the field and then filling that limit is wrong. Shooting a huge buck for the meat, when any of the numerous does would fill your freezer is wrong (see trophy hunting, above. Of course, I may be hypocritical to shoot Greenheads over Coots. Also check managed limits for the area.) Acting like you’re a better hunter than anyone else is wrong. Drinking alcoholic beverages and hunting/shooting is wrong. The list goes on......
From another view of mine - Thinking that all the people and all the animals of the world can continue to live together forever is wrong. Not going out to a huge development and wondering where all the animals went is wrong. Thinking that they can all live together in a smaller area is wrong. Not realizing that this is why there are constant wildlife surveys and ever changing bag limits is wrong. Thinking that you can help a large population of wild animals live forever in a small area by feeding them is wrong. Thinking that all hunters are mean cold heartless people is wrong. Not realizing the need for wildlife conservation through properly managed hunting is very wrong.

Not hunting because you simply don’t get into that sort of thing, and feeling you can not harm animals, is right. Hunters not respecting those who feel that way is wrong. Hunting because you enjoy that sort of thing, and feel you’re actually doing a good thing for wildlife management, is right. Anti-hunters not respecting those who feel that way is wrong. In short - Don’t come chain your butt to a tree screaming your head off while I hunt. And, I wont fly your butt over an area where the herding wildlife are becoming more diseased and running out of rangeland food sources with every passing day. (I can think of seven such areas off hand.)

I agree with your entire post, WVO, except for the part about not eating everything you kill. I sometimes kill beavers, squirells, nutria and raccoons that are severely overpopulated in my state and need to be culled. I feel like this is necessary in my case to perpetuate my family (through keeping my yard disease free) and the species that have urban experience from returning to the wild.

I'm a hunter. Although I don't label myself as either Dem or Rep. I like them both and hate them both. I would vote for Mr LOTE when it comes time. Also based on who held power last time. That way, hopefully the balance swings in the opposite direction and cancels out some of the ill they do.

Yes - In many circumstances where live relocation is not a viable option, culling is necessary.
If that is the case - With many species of wildlife (especially feral hogs and other "semi-game" animals), I recommend contacting your local Hunters for the Hungry program. They will often take what you can/will not consume.
