Not rich enough apparently. The guy sitting next to me today at the casino was playing $500 chips like they were quarters.

Hat, when I was in the USN my ship visited Port au Prince, Haiti. Poppa Doc ruled. Two things about Haiti impressed me deeply. One was the casino.

I walked from the wharf, where my ship was tied, to the casino. Along the way I saw beggars in the gutters who appeared to be starving. If I had given each beggar $5 I wouldn't have gotten 2 blocks with any money. At the casino I played blackjack at a cheap table. I looked at a nearby table where some Haitians were playing with $500 chips. I have not gambled in a casino since.

The second thing I learned in Haiti was the value of life. My ship had a large van to haul sailors around the island. I wanted to go scuba diving so I went with some friends to a hotel along the southern peninsula. On our way out of town we hit a pedestrian. Congestion is so bad, and the streets so decrepit that it was hard to go more than 20 mph. Suddenly a woman came literally flying out of a side street and the van struck her. We were hardly stopped before a Tonton Macoutes thug stepped-out from behind a building and went to the driver's window carrying a submachinegun, and told the driver to keep going. We kept going. We circled back to the ship and made a full report. The Hiatian government said they had no report of that incident.

The meta-lesson is that the most valuable lessons that I have learned have been at the extremes of life.

Fabulously wealthy!

That calculator doesn't accurately reflect all of my assets, but I'm fabulously wealthy. I've got the best woman in the world. She reminded me just how wonderful again this weekend. One conclusion I've come to is that it's the people in your life that make it what it is, not possessions.

one day when my #2 lovely daughter was about 8 (she is 26 now) she came home and was telling us how her friend had been telling her how much her folks made per hour and that her friend had proclaimed that they were rich.

it was less than we were making at the time. so i said "so ______ are we rich?" she said after a pause for thought...."we're rich in love dad!". right answer.

great kid. still is.
