bobby knight fans out there?

as a diehard purdue fan, bobby is persona non grata around here.

so you see the tapes of him "putting the players chin up"? looks alot like a short stroked slap to me.

looks like assault and battery to me.

i cant figure out how he has stayed in coaching so long.

i keep thinking he will go out like woody hayes.

my brother in law admires him because he has won several national championships.

i dislike him because he is a low class bully!

You dislike him because you're a Purdue fan. The General is one of the finest coaches in the history of the game. He has always placed the welfare of his players above winning, yet still manages to win. That said, it does seem that he has wrestled with some anger management issues throughout his career, although I wouldn't count this non-incident among them. Had this been any other coach, I doubt that anyone would even care.

x2.

And about 80% or more of various poll respondents agree. ;)

But, Bobby, you've been gone from West Point (Discipline U.) for eons. Chill out.

And I do think he's got Woody blow-up potential.

Legends (and Generals) in their own minds?

i totally disagree with the statement that he puts the welfare of his players above winning. he in my observation puts winning ahead of everything. he bullies his players mercilessly. intimidates refs and everyone he can. you probably have not seen all the stories we have seen here in indiana in the paper. throwing a lamp at someones secretary because she wouldnt do exactly what he wanted. on and on and on.

oh well. if you ignore all that he knows the game and how to finesse it as it unfolds.

but winning at any cost is not admirable.

for that reason i like mark martin as a driver because he is always straight and clean and i dont like anybody who wrecks folks to win races.

The guy does seem to win games but he can have it. Low class bully it is. And an obsessive one.

The man is famous for benching players (regardless of talent level) for behavioral or academic reasons, and has always insisted that his recruiting prospects graduate, which is one reason Indiana could never attract the talent of other highly regarded teams. His insistence that team play trumps individual stardom has been another. Still, he has taken lessor players and won national championships. Like him or not, Knight has always considered himself a father figure to his players, and assumed responsibility for teaching those in his charge how to succeed in life. He has always put the welfare of his kids above winning. You either know very little about the man, or just see him through the jaded eyes of a Purdue fan.

i said my piece.

we seem to have different facts to reference.

have you by any chance read "season on the brink"? if you are a bobby fan it is a must read. it has some astonishing portrayals.

I never said he didn't have anger issues. :D Hey, if the folks in the WH could run the country like the General can coach, they'd be a lot more palatable.

t walgamuth 11-15-2006 11:39 PM

they have the bully part down pat. now about the winning part. (the war i mean).

funny, we always thought he was able to corrall a lot more talent than we had at purdue.

actually i agree with much of your post, but i think he is much too much of a bully with other folks, regardless of the positive traits that you have documented.

For a team with 3 national championships, IU has had very few players ever go on to the NBA. I'm a long-time Illinois fan, and Illinois has had far, far greater talent than IU, as has Michigan and MSU. In regard to your "bully" comment, I can't say I don't know what you mean. I'd be more comfortable with him myself, if he weren't quite so driven...

Somehow, I doubt the General would have gone along with a non-conference away game in Baghdad... :D

Anyone who is all a twitter about that little tap in the jaw has never played organized sports. Even the kids parents are ok with it and so is the school admin. It is the reporter that wouldn't let it go during the press conference when they were supposed to be talking about the game that should be punished, not bobby knight.
