If you do go with a PC, avoid anything with a celeron like the plague...

They are terrible processors. get something that has at least a centrino.

Compaq sucks. HP sucks. Skip the Celeron.

CJ, for your list of purposes a Celeron M is just fine in a notebook. If you want something simple get an Acer. I use one and it cost $400. The touchpad left click is loose but for the money it's hard to beat.

Friend of mine bought a Toshiba Satellite - no problems after 1 year. Nice large screen, and fairly thin too.
Myself I use a Panasonic at work...It's one of those tough case jobs that you can supposedly drop from 3-4 feet and not hurt it. (no, I'm not gonna find out if it's true).

If they offer a memory upgrade for little $, go for it. More memory never hurt anybody.

Dont know where some of you guys have been, but HP/Compaq PCs and Laptops are now superior to Dells. Dell used to have the best support - but that's been sent to India. Their quality stinks. They FINALLY jumped on the AMD bandwagon... 6 years late. Any laptop is fine for what you listed. Just dont expect to run Windows Vista with anything less than 2GB of RAM (not like you'll want or need it ever).

My G-3 is still running just fine and for most apps, plenty fast enough. Not for games or other graphics-intensive programs. It shows it's arthritis when forced to run. I'm buying a new one within 1-3 months. But the G-3 will still be on the network. I've been thinking about going airport with the next computer but haven't looked into getting my G-3 on it, or my printer.

Anybody have any experience with retrofitting granny-three with airport?

Get a Mac notebook.

If you buy a new Mac notebook with the new Intel chip you can actually run windows, just like a PC.

You will need software to do this. Some people like Bootcamp, but you need to restart the computer to boot it in windows. Other people are fans of a program called parallel, which allows you to switch back and forth between OS X and Windows without shutting down. It is seamless.

And the best thing about Macs is this:

They just work.

I was listening to Lea Laporte on the radio last weekend, and he is a fan of Dell laptops. I have had bad luck with Dells personally, but since he has a nationally syndicdated radio show and TV show, I suppose his opinion is worth more than mine.
