That said...

A bit of amusing and well crafted critique of the living language, from letters in the SF Chron:

English peccadilloes

Editor -- At the risk of violating the First Amendment, our newly elected Congress should meet in emergency session to pass a law expunging that loathsome expression "that said," and its derivatives from English usage.

A person dare not switch on the radio or television set these days without being exposed to a ruthless bombardment of that-said or having-said-that's. As much as I enjoy Ronn Owens' morning talk show, the host, I fear, is a hopelessly addicted that-saider. When he interviewed a fellow addict, Mayor Gavin Newsom, the other day, that tiresome locution bounced off the studio walls like so many Ping-Pong balls for a full hour.

"That said" is merely a device for having it both ways conversationally. The speaker spouts an opinion, then tosses in a "that said" or "that-being-said," and cheerfully contradicts himself. It is, therefore, a useful crutch for politicians and other professional talkers. But I wonder how it might work when applied to utterances of somewhat greater eloquence. For example:

"I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat." That said...

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." That being said...

"And thus the native hue of resolution is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought." Having said that...

RON FIMRITE
San Francisco

Having said that ...

Editor -- Thanks to Ron Fimrite for his castigation of the overused term, "that said" and its variations. Certain words and phrases like this seem to rise from nowhere and begin to be used constantly (sea change, bench mark, at the end of the day.) The fave of the media and pundits, and one the grates on my nerves with increasing regularity, is iconic. I await the day when this one sinks beneath the waves.

Having said that, I remain,

DIANA COOPER

"Basically", "y'know", and "like" are much worser than "that said".

I'm like, down with that. That being said, I think the phrase "sea change" has become purt near iconic and stuff.

I found your last statement clearly vague which I conclude is mirrored in your own reflections. That being said I find the loss of character inherent in the duality of thought singularly expressed and openly contained therein pretty awful.
