1,000,000 mile Saab, you guys will like this!

Not diesel related but a lot of people have these cars.
http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=538098

1M and the engine was not even opened up! Not even one of our diesel's have done that!

Notice he used Mobil 1, can one actualy wear an engine out on a good synthetic oil?

No it went through three motors, one about every 800k.

yes, but it got about 7 engines to go that far... and rebuilt 3 of them during that time.
John 1M miles is great, my Astro is at half that, with no opening of the motor... synthetic and regular oil changes = indefinite mileage.

I wonder what caused the head gasket failures? coolant? WP? "constant heating and cooling" I wish my Astro had the extra digit on the odometer, it would be nice to have verified 500Kmiles and up...

It's a common problem on the 900 - iron block and aluminum head. On average they last about 100k miles. I changed mine at 150k and could still the cross-hatch pattern on the cylinder walls. Using the Mercedes Benz cooland and the 82 degree thermostat and fanswitch help.

From Worldcarfans.com

"During this time the owner was able to call upon the original engine and two spare units, deploying them on a rotational basis 11 times in total."

That puts it an an avg of 400K KM per engine change.

Thats true, there is no money in it for them if people keep there cars. They would like him more if he traded it in for a new one every 50k miles.

" the frame had rusted to the point where it might not have been safe in a serious collision. "There was no point in driving the car any longer, "

That's why I wonder it's really worth spending the money on good synthetic oils. Especially where I live in the salt zone. Most vehicles I've had rusted out long before the engine gave up. Damn I hate rust. Makes me want to get one of those plastic Japanese cars.

The trick is you have two cars, one to sacrifice to the salt, others to keep clean.
