Lexus sitting 6 mo.: get going again....
Wow! Does time fly!! It's been 3 years since I was here because I could not keep up with repairs on my MB and got an '93 Lexus with 250K miles on it; it has problems, too. And I do have a question I need the RIGHT answer to and I knew I immediately knew that I needed to ask my old friends at MercedesShop! Here goes:
My Lexus was parked the first of June of 2006 as I was going out of town and planned to return in a month or two. Six months later and I am about to return for my car and plan to drive it here which is 1000 miles from "home." No one has started it since I left so it has been just sitting. When I get back I want to "refresh" it to make the return drive. An oil change will probably be needed among other things... but just what are the other things I should check to avoid disasterous or minor problems 500 miles down the road? What are the problem areas with "hangar queens"? What kinds of issues can come back to haunt me if I do not take care of it before hitting the road? I miss my MB Thank you in advance for your help. debi

Just change the oil and add fresh gas of course. Maybe some injector cleaner. Go for a shakedown run to test the brakes. You'll probably have some brake noise but drive it anyway. You need to scrub the rust off the rotors. If the brake noise doesn't go away after a few miles you need to look into replacement.

Lots going on around here since you were away. Are you returning to Mercedes?
Still got the 250? You should go to the vintage forum and read the amazing story on the "1971 220" thread - it's a long one, but well w it, Ron in Kentucky saved a '71 220, it's finally just about finished, and it's a really terrific read, and a good education

Check/set the tire air pressure. It will be interesting to hear if the battery is still strong enough to start the car or not.

Tire pressure(don't forget the spare ), fluid levels, and engine belt(s) condition would be my priority, after making sure the battery is replaced, or making sure you have one of those jumper boxes with you in case it goes dead for no reason.
I would bet that a weak battery might start the car, BUT, if the car isn't run for a good solid 1/2 hour after that, it will probably go dead. I would also try to keep as much fresh fuel in the tank as possible while driving, and don't let the fuel level drop below a 1/4 tank, to avoid putting strain on the in-tank electric fuel pump. |
