Wow....serious camera.

My wife likes her Canon SD630 we got earlier this fall. Takes nice pics for a point and shoot.

Canon Powershots are excellent. Go to www.powershot.com and start comparing the many.

My first digi was a Nikon 2.4m-pixel, then I got a Canon 2.5m-pixel and the color quality was lightyears above the Nikon. Since then, I've always bought Canons.

Between a point & shoot and the SLR digitals, there are the mega-zoom cameras. The Panasonic Lumix FZ7 is a 6MP with a 12X zoom by the Leica folks, although the FZ50 is a 10.1MP with a better 12X zoom from the boy and girls in Wetzlar. Prices range from $300 - $700

I think old cameras are a lot more fun. For messing around taking shots I'll use my dad's 30 year old Canon. I just love the heft and build quality and mechanical *clack* and I like being able to easily control depth of field and focus.

For family functions digital cameras are a lot better though.

If you are a starter, the Lumix TZ1 is the way to go, the price is very good. It doesn't have an optical view finder anymore, you are depending on the LCD screen, which is big enough, still it is a different framing...

Nikons are great, Canons too, the later is usually more in price.

If you are savvy, you can find a great FZ20 or FZ30 on ebay, many are selling to get the FZ50. I wouldn't recommend this option for a starter though.

The TZ is great, handles very nice, not too small, very ergonomic, you got a winner there ....

You can PM if you like more info, I have 2 lumix ...
