Never count on VW service depts.

Yesterday, driving from Minneapolis to Chicago, MIL light comes on, flashing. We pull into the Zimbrick VW (nope, not Gilly's former place) and the guy says he couldn't look at it until next Monday. I explain to him the situation and he says nope, sorry, walks away. I'm like, WTF? He says wait until the dispatcher comes back, he'll look and see if he can fit me in.

The dispatcher (wtf is a dispatcher?) comes back. Talk for a bit, he writes it up. Plugs in the VAG tool, 10 mins later comes back and hands me an ignition coil. Fixed. FIXED! I'm like whoot! Anyone who cares, the "dispatcher" or service advisor's name is Mike Baumgartner of Zimbrick VW in Madison (North). Thanks Mike.

I'm still wondering wtf happened? How could Mike do it and the others couldn't?

I'm still having intermittent trouble with the XM radio unit in my VW. Took it in again yesterday and they say that it's too new for there to be any factory bullitens regarding the problem. So, until enough customers report the problem, I'm hosed.

I bet the first guy you talked to was a service writer. They usually know less about cars than my mom. And the second guy was like a shop forman and he was probably working out in the shop at one time. I'll bet he also gives a damn about his job and the place he works in unlike the first guy.

.Official complaint to the management of the dealership.
Followed up by official complaint to VWoA.

Compliment the them on the guy who fixed the problem...but rip them off a strip about the insensitive jerk who said.."........next monday"

I still remember going with my mom to pick up her jetta from the dealership. They had charged her 80 dollars to replace a tail light stating it needed a "special tool". That special tool turned out to be a flathead screwdriver, needless to say i gave the guy a peice of my mind and told him exactly what i thought of him screwing over my mom like that. Additionally, on the same visit, they broke the glove box latch and then refused to fix it saying "that part of the warranty is expired". I will NEVER buy a vw after that, unless of course it is the old corronado.

Had a similar experience with my GF Golf some years back.
We had to take the car in 5 times in 6-7 months for the same thing.
Radiator resevoir hose connector just kept breaking and leaking causing the car to overheat. I just could not beleive that this problem was reoccuring so often. Everytime we brought it in, it took a few days to get the part and fix it. I swore that I would never buy a VW if I could. Just not built like a MB.

Wow so much VW bashing! I have had both good and bad experiences with the VW and the dealership. I think it's just like anything else, a mixed bag. Had problems with the MB's that i've owned and the MB dealership and parts as well. I'm of the opinion that one is not so much better or worse than the other.

Kuan -- get the VagCom cable and software from Ross-Tech and check those fault codes yourself! It's a Godsend. I've never had to so much as call the dealer, thankfully. On long trips, I just toss the old laptop that VagCom is loaded on into the trunk, just in case.

A Corrado or a corronado ? I've never heard of a corronado, and I know that Corrado's are the most unreliable of VW's...all Corrado owners (and ex-corrado owners ) know this.

When I leased my VW a few weeks ago (07 Jetta Wolfsburg), my firneds who had also leased a VW mentioned that I would get a great deal but to be prepared for bad service later! No problems yet, of course, but I'm dreading the first little glitch! My salesman (who was an acquaintance) mentioned if I need to take it in for service, I could take it to any VW dealer, including the VW/BMW dealer. Like hell I'm going there! They already have a bad rap, I'll take my chances with the dealership of origin!

So far the MB service depts have been good to me. Don't know a think about VW. We have 2 service advisors there and both have gone out of their way to be nice. What can I say? Buy MB?

Yeah you don't have my kid. One day, when I drive through Madtown, I'll stop by your place and you can see the inside of my car.

There has to be something too this, because I hear a lot of bad stuff about VW service through the grapevine.

Paid over $30K for new '06 Jetta TDI last yr. The dealer offers most piss poor customer service I have ever seen.
Took the car in for scheduled service and ask about a rattle at that time.
Claimed they didn't have time to look at it this time when we picked it up.
Take it back and they claim rattles are not covered under warranty now.
Another time they had it listed on the service invoice as a gas engine. I noticed later the oil change sticker says they used GTX instead of the required VW synthetic. I called afterwards to ask what oil they had used and, voiced my concern and was told they used synthetic then was hung up on.
Called back for the manager. Got ahold of some other idiot who says the manager was out and would call me back. He never called.
Other than sending the oil off for analysis I'll never know.

Nice car other than the dealer(s).

Reminds me of my travails in dealing with Ford garages with my Taurus SHO. Same stories as TDI owners have about VW dealers -- little/no knowledge about the power plant. Too bad, as TDIs (as were SHOs) are awesome cars! Mine has never required dealer service (knock on wood); most of the work I do myself. But in your case, it's got to be particularly frustrating as he car's under warranty and they OWE you the work!
