My tire guy at Discount Tire told me they used ether all the time on stiff walled tires in winter since the air hose could not provide enough air fast enough to seat the bead. He mumbled something about the good old days and missing eyebrows.

I bet getting that tire on the rim itself was a *****

Can someone tell me how this works? The fire creates a vacuum... outside the rim and draws air into the tire?

The ignition cause the gases to expand, forcing the tire against the rim as they try to escape.

Which gasses? The gasses in the tire?

strike a match and put it in a coke bottle, then set a hard boiled egg on top and watch it get sucked in.
Discovery did a show on those land cruisers--I ordered the tape years ago when they made it when i was a land cruiser looser (had one the same year) |

That's what I thought, the gasses get sucked into the tire, not the other way around like Emmerich was saying.

Isn't it an explosion in the enclosed space of the tire where the concentration of ether is higher than outside where it burns? If ether doesn't explode in an enclosed space, how could it be a starter fluid?

The coke bottle and egg works because the match burns the air in the bottle, reducing the pressure.
The tire is just like a cylinder in an engine. You have an air-fuel mixture and when you ignite it, it expands (rapidly) and the force pushes outward. In this case it pushes on the inside of the tire forcing it against the bead. It does not work on vacuum. *if* there was a vacumm in the tire, the pressure on the outside of the tire would push it away from the rim, opposite of what we want.

So Emmie you're saying the gasses expand inside the tire.
Could someone PLEASE explain 'cause I'm still not getting it.
