Unhappy R.I.P. - Joe Barbera

Joe Barbera of the animation team Hanna-Barbera died today. He was the last surviving member of the duo. Their cartoons were some of my favorites when I was a kid.

The only thing I can still watch today and enjoy is Tom and Jerry... they still make me laugh out loud.

I enjoyed watching the shows that the man put out. Those cartoon types are gone forever.

Johnny Quest! Never missed a first-run episode. Some pretty scary content for a six-year old.

Ain't that the truth. I can't even watch it.

The old Tom and Jerry cartoons are the best. The animation was the best. They are hilariously funny and seldom was is word spoken.

If your provider offers the "Boomerang" channel, it's 24/7 Hanna Barbera!

I sat up one night and watched "Top Cat"...you could tell that there was a bit more adult humor in cartoons back then, since many of them aired during prime time when I was a kid (and Color TVs were as cutting edge as BluRay)!

Two episodes had me up nights thinking about 'em...that big spider-like weapon, and the invisible one-eyed monster that had stuff blow up when it came in contact with it!

G-Benz nailed it. Boomerang is hot.

Since Adelphia went bankrupt and Time Warner bought them out, I just discovered a few weeks ago that I have Boomerang!

I've been watching Tom and Jerry, Huckleberry Hound (exit stage left!), Yogi Bear, and Wacky Racers almost daily.

Best cartoons ever. Nothing comes even close.

I didn't realize he did the Smurfs. A little after my time I guess.

And I've never seen or heard of Johnny Quest.

JQ had one of the very best theme song/intro sequences ever done, animated or live action. The only ones that can match it are the original 1966 "Mission: Impossible" and the intro sequence from the early episodes of "Batman: The Animated Series."

That said, H-B was the McDonald's of animation -- they gave the customer a decent but not outstanding product as far as the actual artwork went. Of course, H-B didn't have the budget of Disney, so we shouldn't expect to see the equivalent of "Snow White" or "Lady and the Tramp" on the screen every week.

But I grew up with "Top Cat," "The Flintstones," "The Jetsons," "Huckleberry Hound," "Quick Draw McGraw," "Yogi Bear," and so many others.

"Smarter than the average bear!"
( -- Yogi, congratulating himself yet again)
