Just don't be suprised when you get a copy of Dr. Phil's book for your birthday.

Are they killing themselves because they are severely obese, shooting heroin and drinking 1/2 gallons of Jack every day or are they just not like you? I ask because I know you are an extremely fit person and it may not be a fair comparison. I have to work pretty hard to keep from imposing my lifestyle on family members and friends, but life is more enjoyable with the people you love if you aren't a constant critic (my perspective, my flaw--one of many!)

Severely obese, couch potatoes, they're early 30's, and they eat too much fried food and ice cream. This year their lab results are starting to look bad, real bad. I can't imagine what it'll be like at 40.

Both have a BMI of over 50.

Book ain't gonna help--take them to volunteer at a hospital or something, or leave the tV on that channel that has surgeries running 24/7.

Kuan, that's sad. I guess it's pretty hard to sit by and watch, but people are going to do their own thing. It sounds like they're in good company. What you described sounds like a growing per centage of Americans.

She's a nurse.

On a more serious note, I know some sensitivity is required, but OTOH I think we've become a little too damn sensitive. I'm open to all suggestions. I know the thread started off with me making a snide remark but I really want to get the ball rolling. Just last week some guy who works with my wife went to sleep and didn't wake up. Age 39. Last year, a friend's brother, age 41.

It never ceases to amaze me how people in the medical profession seem to abuse their bodies. Of all people I would think THEY would have a more healthy lifestyle. I frequently see medical students, interns, and residents standing around outside the hospital and smoking. I know the medical profession is stressful, but it still surprises me.

Kuan- The only person who can impliment change is the individual himself, save your money. I used to be overweight and smoked two packs of cigarettes a day.....I quit smoking and lost weight and stay within a 5lb. range until the dang Holidays....I exercise alot...

Plantman 12-22-2006 01:39 PM

If you care for them enough, you shouldn't worry about hurting their feelings.

After all you mean well.

I do agree that change will only come if they want it to.

All the books in the world aren't going to help if they don't put forth the effort.

I made myself a promise that I will not go on anymore diets.

What I have done is change my lifestyle in regards to eating. And I started to weeks ago, not waiting until 2007.

More fruits, vegetables, no fried foods, etc....

Diets imply that you will do a certain thing to lose weight, return to your old habits than gain weight again.

Think of women that lose 10 lbs on a crash diet just to fit into a certain dress. Guys too!

Definitely sounds like they need a lifestyle change.

The bad thing about being that obese, is that sooner or later you will make a lifestyle change, whether you like it or not.

'Tis the season to sit back and watch the inlaws and outlaws indulge in petty squabbles and listen to the same stale jokes and catty character assassinations retailed for years without change.

Grab a drink, huff some 420 and chill out.

Get a designated driver and put yourself in a state that you won't care.

Used to be a stupid joke:How many headshrinks does it take to change a lightbulb:One! but the lightbulb must want to be changed, none of your affair.

Experience has sadly instructed me that "helping" family members will come back and bite you in the a**,so let it rest.
