Anyone ever import a car from Canada?

Here's the deal.
I recently puchased a Mercedes, out of Alberta,Canada.I need to get the car here, and want to do it legitimately,if possible.
The car is a Euro car,with cereal number,saying it's one of those Canada,or europe only models,and techinically,not U.S. qualified.
Any of you guys ever import one like this? If so...,how? I have some ideas of ways to do it,but they would mess with the authenticity of the car on paper, which will hurt it's collectable value.I only intend to drive the car on occasion, but still would like regular registration on it for the state of Ct.
I keep getting different stories on the proper method of bringing the car here, from different people, and govt.agencies, and can't get the same story from two different people yet.
Anyone have any more insight on the matter?I've gone to a few govt.web sights but can't get the info for some reason.Everything I find points to having an import agency handle it.I just want to bring one meezly car in for myself to drive a few times a year in nice weather, and for personal use only, thats basically all.Any help from anyone, will be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance
Nick

I don't think it is easy. All the usual EPA/DOT restrictions would apply for the car. Maybe a search at www.canadiandriver.com forum might yield something, I believe a few have been brought in, and the matter was discussed there.

I think Bruce Mendel who is here and at Benzworld here might know something about it.

Depends on the age of the car. If it is too much trouble to import it, register it in Canada and drive it anywhere.

I've looked into bringing a Benz from the US into Canada, with the dollar being as high as it is. Lots of benefits - bigger selection, no salt issues and lower cost.

But - it seems Mercedes has thought this over a tad and the bottom line is that they don't want this happening for obvious market reasons.

So - there are quite a few modifications that are required for Mercedes. Headlights, bumper, etc. to list a few. They have to be performed at a qualified Mercedes dealer. There is substantial paperwork to apply for and present when crossing the border.

All in all, they've made it a significant hassle to deter just this kind of activity.

There are a few threads on this forum about it, a search will bring them up.

You didn't mention a year? If this is an older model, over 20 years old, you're in the clear. I think 20 is the magical number - it might be 15, I can't recall exactly. But past a certain age, you don't need to go through this process.
