Midland/Odessa TX

Any of you folks in Midland or Odessa, Texas? I have to go there next week. What's the weather like there this time of year?

Windy and cold usually this time of year. We're currently getting blasted by this ice storm in Texas, but by next week I'd guess 50-60 degrees with a constant 15mph wind. Why would you go there? Boring, if you ask me.

Going to see a customer and make a pretty good-sized sale (I hope).

He told me that this part of Texas is "real pretty this time of year." I used to live in Oklahoma and it was hot as hell in the summer and cold as all get out in the winter. I figured west Texas would be about the same.

So, where are you, POS?

Been there. There's nothing between Midland/Odessa and the north pole but a barbed-wire fence, and it's down in two places.

So. I guess I should pack a sweater, then?

I've done time there more than once.

He's definitely pulling your chain with that comment; you probably want to requalify that buyer.

Midland-Odessa is flat as a board and just about as interesting; imagine western Oklahoma without any trees, with more wind and even less culture. Hell, the place wouldn't have been at all if the wagon hadn't broke a wheel on the way west. But, in defense of the place, (if you are on expense account) there are some really, really good steakhouses in both Midland and Odessa. The old joke is "Party in Odessa but raise your family in Midland."

When I worked for M/D TOTCO, we had to make an annual appearance at the Permain Basin oil show which is held at the Ector county fairgrounds.

Thanks, Randy. Yeah, he's DEFINITELY qualified. An oil & gas man with plenty of loot as long as I can pry his fingers off of some of it, it'll definitely be worth my while.

I'll look for one of those steakhouses. Which one do you recommend?

I'm no help here; it was '95-2001 that I worked for M/D-T and I can't remember names. IIRC, there was a place on the north side of Midland that I recall as being nice and not a chain.

BTW, if your prospect thinks Midland/Odessa is pretty this time of year, he's pretty damned weird.

Good luck,
R

Well, it wouldn't be the first time, nor the last for that to be true. Some people might say that about me.

My dad used to always say, "Different strokes for different folks . . . " I guess that's what makes people so damned interesting.
