Barbaro--what a stud he would have made!

After a long and brave fight, racehorse Barbaro was not able to make it through the home stretch.

The Jockey Club does not permit artificial insemination. Here's the rule:
Quote:
To be eligible for registration, a foal must be the result of a stallion’s Breeding with a broodmare (which is the physical mounting of a broodmare by a stallion with intromission of the penis and ejaculation of semen into the reproductive tract). As an aid to the Breeding, a portion of the ejaculate produced by the stallion during such mating may immediately be placed in the uterus of the broodmare being bred. A natural gestation must take place in, and delivery must be from, the body of the same broodmare in which the foal was conceived. Without limiting the above, any foal resulting from or produced by the processes of Artificial Insemination, Embryo Transfer or Transplant, Cloning or any other form of genetic manipulation not herein specified, shall not be eligible for registration.

So, if Barbaro sires any babies, they might be really nice horses, but they won't be registered thorougbreds.

you should see how they collect hog sperm!

i have not seen it but i hear they have a fake sow which they allow the hog to mount after a little equivalent of hog erotica (they allow the boar to smell females close by in a pen who are in heat).

then someone has to get under the fake sow and collect the sperm.

it would take a lot of money to get me to do that.....

but i would for the right price!

The Jockey Club is the registry for American thoroughbreds. If a horse is not bred in accordance with their rules, the it is not a thoroughbred and therefore can't race in thoroughbred races.

thanks for the clarification, d.

i just watched "hildago" tonight, again. the movie about the cowboy who raced a wild mustang in the thousand mile arabian race. pretty fun movie. and at least based on a true story.

i looked for my copy of seabiscuit but couldn't find it. i am in the mood to read that again.

i ran across my copy of "mr. citizen" by harry truman and started it again.

I seem to recall some horses can be bred with AI and still be code legal. Trotters maybe.

I milked cows in Florida for a while in the early 70s. The "breeder" would come around now and then. He'd put on an arm length latex glove and proceed to stick his arm way up their anus.

One day I asked him: "pardon me for asking but aren't you sticking your arm up their anus?" He answered cheerfully "yes I am!" He proceeded to explain that he could find the uterus through the membrane inside and hold it so that the sperm pill, which he would insert with a rod, could be inserted into the womb. With the cost of that stuff, they didn't want to waste it.

I imagine they could have sold some of his sperm somewhere for big bucks -- overseas somewhere, Arabian lands perhaps.
I think that they are already doing pretty well with horses down in good old Arabia.
