Mississippi Burning.......again

Barge Hits Mississippi River Bridge and Catches Fire
A barge float carrying crude oil hit a railroad bridge over the Mississippi River and caught fire Thursday night. A U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said there were no injuries and no official reports of crewmen in the water after the accident, which happened at 8:59 p.m. Casino's in the Vicksburg area say let it burn as guest swarm in to watch the barge burn in heated comfort.

CIA Director Quietly Buys Nuclear-Attack Insurance

January 23, 2007 | Issue 43•04

BETHESDA, MD—According to sources at the Allstate Insurance Company, CIA Director Michael Hayden purchased nuclear-attack insurance Wednesday, paying a $100,000 monthly premium for his homes in suburban Washington, Pittsburgh, and near Cheyenne Mountain, CO. "It's a typical nuclear policy that protects the insured from damages caused by fallout—pretty straightforward, though at that monthly rate, I don't usually sell too many of them," said Bethesda, MD–based Allstate agent Gary Rutter, adding that Hayden paid for the first premium with a certified bank check to guarantee that the policy would take effect no later than next Monday. "After he purchased the insurance, he asked again if everything was set for Monday. I assured him it was, and then he left." Insurance agents throughout the D.C. area reported selling 35 such policies in the last week, all to high-ranking government officials.

Thanks, Bot. We'll all have a nice weekend here in the Washington, DC area. Isn't that a bit like discovering that right after you put your life savings into a sure-fire investment, the top executives were all "quietly" selling all of THEIR stock in the company?!

As a native Vicksburger, we called that the PJ's bridge, as that was the fastest route to Louisiana where the drinking age was 18. You had two choices once you got there - Daiquiri World or PJ's Bar. DW was a drive-thru daiquiri place, and PJ's was an eclectic mix of high-schoolers and Harley riders. You went to PJ's if you want to relax with a beer and play pool; DW if you wanted something for the road.

It didn't hit the I-20 bridge--it only hit the rail bridge paralell to it. There was a train on it, btw, when it got hit.

That bridge was closed to vehicle traffic in the mid 1990's, IIRC. The bridge was very narrow - if there was an 18-wheeler coming from the other direction you had to clench 'em pretty tight.

Man, I remember that! I was a new driver when I first crossed that bridge. Scared s*tless! Years later I crossed the Huey P Long pulling an airboat. Same feeling.

BTW, did you know they are adding additional lanes to the Huey?

Last I heard there was not a problem, but I haven't been down der inna coupla momphs.

When I was doing a lot of field work in Lafitte back in the 1990's we ate in dang near every restaurant on the Westbank (or seemed so). There was a nice little restaurant in the shopping center over in Arabie named, "Aurora's" that I really liked a lot. It was pretty standard menu, but very well prepared and excellent service. I don't know if it's still going.

Also, one of the worst beers I ever drank was from a craft brewery in Marrero that I hope got destroyed by Katrina -- Day Beer.

Daiquiri World or as it now called "The World" still exists With it's famous drive through Daiquiri window. It's sort of a cool place to go on a weekend if you want to see a lot of bikes, exotic cars, and babes Other than that it's just a hole in the wall.
