I have a month vacation time I must take...What would you do?

What is the most memorable vacation, or trip, or experiance you ever had and wish you could do it again.
I looking for ideas for wife, myself & 16yo daughter. We have already car traveled so much that it really doesn't sound appealing except to get 'there'. We like to go and stay places and take in the local culture & we like experiances. We like sailing, history, culture, outdoors...

(One or twice a year for the last 5 years, wife & I go to Charlotte, NC to drive retired Nascar racecars, and blow them up on Lowes Motor speedway. So we got that part covered already.)

Go spend a month in Costa Rica. You can doit on the cheap, although having a car down there for that period of time may get expensive........

Windsuring, sailing, fishing, rafting, ect.....all very reasonable if you stay out of the big resorts and stay in local joints.

Two memorable vacations come to mind. Spent a month paddling the South Nahnni river in the NWT. You would need moderately good whitewater skills to do the top part but the rest is pretty easy. There are outfitters that do it.
Motorhoming around Europe. Bought a used motorhome on the Internet and travelled around the UK and France. Sold the motorhome on the net when done. Inexpensive way to see Europe.

There's a group that does motorhome trips from Paris to Peking. That trip intrigues me but it's more than a month.

When during the year? Dogsledding and icefishing in the boundary waters is fantastic this time of the year.

Take a month in Bali, but wait another month or so for the rainy season to end. I wish I could have stayed there a whole month.

Where would you depart from and how much do you want to spend on transit?

People always seem to like Australia and New Zealand. I have never been though. It is summer there now.

That all sounds best to me.

Here's the mode of transportation.

Seriously, dogsledding is real fun. You can go yurt to yurt, sleep outside with the dogs, go icefishing, experience northern culture.

That or do the 10th mountain division hut system.

Oh maybe I misread the question;

A couple of suggestions depending on when you plan to go and your budget;

Beaches Resort all inclusive for a couple of weeks in Jamaica. Always plenty to do enjoy the ocean- rent some scooters and explore - keep an eye on the teenager ...plenty of local shopping for the wifey.

If you can pull it off ALaska is a nice place to cruise to & unforgetable;
I got this emailed to me a couple of days ago.

If you are into it; do the European Vacation thing- you can fly into London for best prices- then with a month to kill; as long as you don't spend it all in Germany , you can't go wrong.........

What about a Scandanavian vacation in the summer? Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. The most beautiful scenery you will imagine. English spoken most everywhere, interesting food, very safe, opportunities galore for sailing (especially Norway!) climate is the best in June and July, everything safe and clean, fascinating museums in the large cities like Helsinki, Olso and Stockholm, not the cheapest, but one the best choices you could make. You could expand the trip a bit, to go from Helsinki to Estonia or St. Petersburg, or from Denmark to the South into Germany. Amsterdam to London then home

Definately worth a thought.

Go to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Unlike Europe the US dollar goes a long way there. The culture there is mostly southern European, Spanish, French, Italian, not Hispanic. If you like old cars take the ferry across the Plate river and see Uruguay. It's like stepping back into the '30. Go into southern Brazil and see Iguasu falls. Take a 3 day trip down to Baralochi near the border with Chile. It is the chocolate capitol of the world. The town looks like it is out of the Swiss Alps.

These are some freeking good ideas....got my juices going. Now I realize a month is not enough. I have to take the time before the end of the year or I lose it.
We were thinking of Europe, but we couldn't settle on where. And visions of the 'Griswold's European vacation' kept creeping into my thoughts. Touring France & Germany sounded good at one time; but I like the Scandinavian countries also. I know we could settle on that one. Since i'm My daughter wants to go to Japan; I say too expensive. But Vietnam & Cambodia sound good. Even China sounds cool.
But when you don't speak Chinese, Vietnamese... I would be struck with a tour; but it may not be that bad.
Figi, Coasta rica, the Keys, Mexico & other warm places sound good. Thought of buying a Florida sailboat on ebay; do some cruising; the put it back on ebay when we are done.
Winter sports don't sound good, we don't like to freeze.
We like doing vacations on the cheap; but we dont have to. I found if I start spending a lot of money then my expectations start going up and then I feel shortchanged. The best vacations so far have been on the cheap. I mean how much does it cost to hike in the Rockies/Sierras get chased by a bear or go to Art & history Museums or go to festivals or go for a swim in a lake....next to nothing

Thanks for the ideas and keep em' comming.
