00' Mazda MPV won't hold idle.

Anyone familar with these soccer wagons?

It has trouble holding idle when cold... the problem seems to extend longer into the drive with the passage of time but eventually will cure itself intill it sits overnight.
This is the wifes car so I don't drive it enough to know every nuance of the development of this issue.
I plan on getting some codes pulled when I get a chance, will update then.
Thanks.

Might have an idle speed motor like a Toyota, sometimes they gum up and stick,a shot of Gunk or brake cleaner in the intake plenum generally cures it.

Mostly due to extended idling and short trips where the engine doesn't get hot enough to burn off the crappy carbon that's recirculated from the crankcase.Just a guess, happened on all Toyotas I've serviced that have seen limited, around town use.

Thanks I will. that's a pretty good description of its usual routine and would go a long way toward explaining why she always complains about my driving. Sadly the motor is a ford 2.5 V6 but I think the rest was built in Hiroshima.

Har,har...Fat Man or Little Boy.....pull off the air cleaner, rubber hose to access the throttle plenum/body,look for some large holes on the side/bottom of the assembly, remove associated hoses and shoot brake cleaner{more powerful than Gunk}and observe what comes out. Might wanna check specific forums or just google your make and model with it's problem. At any rate, best of luck!

Yeah it's hard to go screaming down to the market when your babies are all around you and you're top heavy.

It's a Duratech 2544, shaved down to 2.49 so as to slip under a 2.5 tax cap in Japan. I was thinking everything was microchips these days but I guess they still burn gas.

I'll let you guys know what happens when I get a chance to get at it. I can't try it now cause she's out lugging it as we speak.

My 96 Suzuki Sidekick sometimes has a problem with too low an idle. When I pull the codes it says there is a problem with the throttle position sensor.

Could be a throttle position sensor, generally on the opposite side of the cable assembly on the plenum. I still am inclined to a gummy idle motor, look on the Ford forums, could be something totally different.

I
I dont see what chest size has to do with the way the car runs.
I vote for cleaning the idle air controll motor and throttle plate.

Don't try to clean the IAC in situ, at least with brake cleaner. Look for a cleaner that indicates "Safe for oxygen sensors" on the can if you want to spray anything into the intake system.

I tell my wife to keep the Saab in "3" around town and "D" only after she's hit the highway. At least it's not lugging AS bad, and it blows some junk out for the few seconds she's on the highway before she remembers to slip it into "D."

Good luck!
