Tokyo tuneup?

Did anyone catch the description of a Tokyo tuneup in the Mar 07 C&D? Someone asked if Italian tuneups are necessary/effective in modern cars. The response is that the Italian tuneup has been replaced by the Tokyo tuneup involving big spoilers and exhaust pipes on a "sluggish $hitbox"

I thought a Tokyo tuneup was sinking $50,000 worth of mechanicals into a drift car.

I like the huge spoilers on the back of front-wheel drive cars! That's great.

satire

I forgot where I saw it... maybe Hot Rod... a parody magazine called Ricer. The cover debate was "paint or decals, which is faster"

Actually "ricer" is more appropriate for the rides of those 20 something airheads in North America. This side of the pond (Tokyo) young punks drive big V8s, the bigger the better, lowered Lexus LS400s, still called Toyota Celsior until recently (2005), or big ass older Nissan Presidents, and of course the ever popular 140 V12 badged, always black with AMG rims and tinted windows. I very rarely see a "ricer" around here, on the other hand Toronto, Canada is full with those idiots in Acuras and Civics with wings. For some reason souped up minivans are also in fashion, it is rather strange to see an 18" Brabus or OZ rim on a soccer mom's ride.

Mostly younger guys actualy, by the time they hit 20 most grow out of it, and realize 4cy FWD cars in general suck. Of course there is always that percent...

In my area and age group guys that want fast cars drive Mustangs, Vette's, M3's and S4's.

The ricer wannabe's have either traded in there Civic's for Supra's which I can respect, or are just laughed at. Supra's are fast, some are crazy fast, don't race a Supra because you can get pwned.

I know my cousin had a wicked fast Civic. I forget the specs but he had some super hot only avail in Japan Honda motor in it, with all the tweaks, big turbo etc. It was fast, but the torque steer was amazing. He liked it didn't do anything for me. One heck of a safe car though, he flipped that thing at an amazing speed didn't get a scratch!

It would be better if they replaced that puny four banger with a turbo'd version of their flat 6.

Drop in an EJ-20 and it'll be worth the $30,000 pricetag.
