300sel 3.5!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970-300sel-300-sel-3-5-Euro-version-low-reserve-Nice_W0QQitemZ260083641243QQihZ016QQcategoryZ6330QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
The first running MB in our family was almost like this - had tan tex, floor shift, zebrano, Euro headlights and no side markers. Looks so right in black with black hubcaps I kinda wonder what a 6.3 is like because the 3.5 was way too much for the suspension You really want the 3.5 if a 6.3 will break the bank because the 4.5 feels... umm... American in comparison. Sixto 93 300SD 3.0 |

Sixto,
I have been having dreams about that car. The perfect "Check Point Charlie", East German Cold War vehicle. It just looks so right in black with black hub caps. It should come with a P-38 in the glove box.

Oh how I yearn to drive a W108. What do you mean the 4.5 is American? Not as free revving as the 3.5 i'm supposing.

Well I never had much against those lazy high torque, low revving engines of yore. Fun to cruise around in.
Do the 3.5's have the same 3 speed auto?

Years ago, I had a '71 300SEL 3.5, and have driven a 4.5 and 6.3 W109. The 3.5 was, imho, the best real world compromise. The 6.3 was too much for everyday driving, and the 4.5 was really "Americanized.
The 3.5 was a short stroke, high compression motor that was coupled to a fluid coupling four speed automatic. You had to rev it to get power out of it, but it sounded like a 308 Ferrari. The automatic banged out harsh shifts and drove like a manual transmission, with no slippage, thanks to the fluid coupling. More than one h.p. per cubic inch. The 4.5 was a slightly detuned 3.5, with longer stroke and less compression amongst other changes(cams and ignition curve) that was coupled to a slushbox automatic with a torque convertor three speed. It had a lower redline and didn't quite sing like the M116 3.5 motor, though it had more low end torque than a 3.5 motor. Less than one h.p. per cubic inch. Just my .02.... |

Beatiful car. Are those the original seats, they look modern, at least I have seen the uphstery in newer benzes. Maybe it was redone. Love the car great looking car though.

Velour was used for many years in upper-grade MB's, but mostly in Europe. I seem to recall that it was a no-cost option in U.S.-spec w126 coupes, but in America, leather = luxury, so few were so equipped.

You could get it in any W126, very few people checked that option box though. Personaly I think its better than leather.
