A deal with North Korea
So a deal has been reached:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070213/ts_nm/korea_north2_dc_12 In a nutshell, NK gets loads of fuel oil, removed from the list of states that sponsor terrorism, and bank accounts unfrozen. In return for this, they cease further activity in their weapons-grade nuclear fuel enrichment program. Is this a good deal for the world? NK reportedly has enough weapons-grade plutonium to manufacture a dozen bombs, but they get to keep these. And the last time NK reached a deal (bilaterally with the US in '94) they broke their word. What is there to suggest we should trust them this time? And have they really given enough? I never thought I'd find myself agreeing with John Bolton, but he's right. A deal like this only encourages other states to scramble towards obtaining nuclear weapons if for nothing other than a tool to force negotiations.

They got what they wanted. Now they can continue to devlope them in secret for awhile longer.

It's been their M.O. Make some noise and wait for the money to come their way. Kim Jong Il will stir things up again in another couple years or so.
Bolton is dead-on with his assessment.

Keep in mind that North Korea has kept up their end of pretty much all of the deals they made unless the US dropped their end first. Typically the US has not followed through on any of their promises by more than half over the last 15 years and North Korea stirs things up after the promise has already been broken by the other side. This time will probably end up being no different.

It is true that NK has a good deal this time. On the other hand, since our hands are tied in that peninsula, peaceful resolution; no matter how short live is still better than the alternative. Maybe if we held him off long enough, Kim will die of natural cause. Same stance we have with Cuba. Unless in the highly unlikely event someone within NK topples the regime.

I wouldn't give them jack *****. If north Korea does anything China doesn't like the PLA will deal with them very quickly.
I'd let them do whatever they want, if they start hurting the PLA's wallet, there gone. I remember a couple years ago there was a bunch of pirates operating out of a port/village in southern China. Seized a few large ships, $$$$. Usualy these pirates are not caught, but this started to affect Chinese shipping. The PLA figured out where they were coming from...no more problem since...

That's not surprising given they've all had they're heads in the sand. It's not my intention to defend North Korea's actions, but they're not the only ones who've made this mess what it is today.

Negotiating with them seems about as efficacious as Neville Chamberlain's deal with A Hitler. I would rather see China deal with them. They have a lot more to lose than we do, it seems to me. Maybe this is what Bush & Co. have been hoping would happen.
