GM to buy Chrysler?

For everyone who has been scratching their head over the DCX "merger", here's some interesting news off the wire:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070216/bs_nm/chryslergroup_gm_dc_2

If the DCX merger didn't seem like a winner, then how is this good for GM, who has been divesting itself of whole brands in recent years and has way too much production capacity already? The only business that Chrysler has that doesn't directly compete with GM are minivans and RWD sedans. This just makes no sense to me.

Yeah! I've never seen a large corporation do something stupid before. That's odd!

I'm in the photographic industry and I've always believed that Kodak must have an unwritten rule somewhere that says "Let's do something, even if it's wrong." Of course, that type of thinking is not limited to Kodak.

I heard on the radio this morning that Chrysler was trying to work out a deal with GM to provide a Chrysler badged and restyled Tahoe. I thought that was strange enough given the fact that it wouldn't take much to make Ram into a full size SUV of various lengths given all of the combinations you can get get a pickup in.

Don't forget, a very willing seller can equal a very attractive price.

Actually if you look at GM stock over the past year... they really *are* in a position to buy. And although I don't like seeing two firms on a decline merge, in this case it may work. Chrysler has a TON of intel from MB and has the hot styling that GM can't seem to grasp. GM has a leaner profile cost wise now and Chrysler is coming up on needing exactly that.

With that being said, and as much as I hate the over-used word "synergy" -- I'm going to say that this could create a formidable winner. Naturally I already divested myself of GM (damit) and am have a tiny profit on some F.

In the end I don't think much will come of these talks. But should create an interesting situation.

And OH BOY will Kirk be one pissed off little bastard if it does happen.

Trying to regain market share and improve in areas other than full size trucks.

Interesting move, I look forwarding to reading a more in depth article on it.

I remember reading about the last time such a strategy was tried: Studebaker bought Packard.

How about GM losing close to a billion on sub-prime mortgages? And you thought they could only loose money making cars, now GMAC, which used to be the only thing of value in GM, is seeing its shine come off too.

I always thought the only reason MB merged with Chrysler was to avoid being taken out themselves by someone bigger. If that is the case it worked to this point and they are best to shed Chrysler.

Chrysler has "hot" styling? On what? Okay, I'll give the 300, but I can't think of another model that is even remotely worth considering.

The 300 is a good car - If I needed to buy a "big 3" 4-door car, that would be the one.

But the Caliber? The Charger? The Sebring? Just my opinion FWIW but yuk.

Actually, I would take the Viper over the Vette.

Actually, that was around 1957.

And Chrysler bought up American Motors in 1988! (Got the Jeep Cherokee out of it, not very much else.....)
