Who likes jazz?

Who among us likes jazz and which bands/musicians do you like the best?

I'm listening to Kyle Eastwood (relative of Clint?) doing something called "Now." I love this tune.

I like the older stuff. Coltrane's "Dakar" is one of my favorite albums.

Cannonball Adderly is another one of my favorites. You haven't heard jazz until you hear his version of "Fiddler on the Roof." Bizarre? Yes. But entertaining nonetheless.

I first got hooked on Jazz listening to Herbie Mann's Memphis Underground in 1971. I mostly listen to the stuff played on smooth jazz stations.

Arturo Sandoval.

Last Sunday my son and I attended a special benefit showing of the movie Flyboys (the movie is very good, it just didn't do well at the box office). The director, Tony Bill was present at the benefit and he talked about the movie and conducted a Q&A session.

The benefit was to raise money for a jazz preservation group. As part of the show, they showed clips of interviews with WWII veterans. The focus of the interviews was the effect that music, and especially jazz, had on soldiers while they were fighting the war.

It was really interesting to hear them share their WWII expereinces in the context of music.

I love jazz, but then again it is a well known fact that jazz was invented in Cuba, so it runs in my blood!

Yeah, I love Weather Report, too. They don't still play together anymore, though, do they? Sirius has three jazz stations and one blues station that are great. I think XM probably does, too.

No. Jaco Pastorius died several years ago. Kicked out of a nightclub and smacked his head on the curb (so I hear). I've got a solo record of his stuff. 60% of my cd's are jazz.

Well, Jim, that's what I've always heard, too. I've always heard people who seemed to know more than I do say that jazz is the only original American style of music. I certainly couldn't dispute that. I just know what I like.

Can you expand what constitues "jazz"?

If you consider what they call "smooth" jazz, well, I just LOOOOVE that.

For example,Pat Metheny, and the Album "SECRET STORM"
I just love the way the Cambodian Choir sings "Above the Treetops" then segues into Pat's "Facing West".

That performance just transports me, it lifts ME into the clouds, it's like magic...

So, yeah, I'd guess I am actually a BIIIG fan of jazz, if that "smooth" jazz qualifies.

Just to sit back with a glass of cold chardonnay, and a maybe even a
little Lebanese sweetie,
like, http://www.pxdrive.com/picture/80442.html

and just enjoy.....
