The Daytona 500
Sunday is the big race!
For myself, it has not been the same since the infernal restrictor plates. For my money they need to knock down the high banking and make the tracks wider so they can run wo plats at Daytona and Talledega. These belly button cars don't do it for me. Juan Pablo Montoya will make an interesting sub plot to watch. When he was driving the Indy cars he was amazing. He could drive a loose car better than anybody. Amazingly quick hands. I think and hope he will do well. The nearest parallel I can draw is Nigel Mansell coming from F1 Champion to Indy cars back in 95? He was a quick study. Very very fast but driving a road race line (I read....I really don't know what that means) he spun and hit the wall hard at a one mile oval...must have been Phoneix. And drove at Indy with a seriously bruised and bleeding back, but managed to finish second or third after grazing the wall on about the 197th lap. It seems as if he may have won the championship that year as well. Of course Mansell stepped into Michael Andrettis car, a first class ride. Montoya's Ganassi team has not been top tier in Nascar for a few years now. I hope they can give him a winning capable horse. Bill Elliot has headed home already, having failed to qualify. I love watching him run but am glad he is retiring without suffering any serious injury. I will be holding my breath...waiting for the inevitable BIG ONE... and praying for a safe one. Tom W |
At the risk of a feud..........
Who wants to watch "stock" cars race around in circles. It is just a waste of gas if you ask me. Just my opinion, happy watching. |
Nascar has lost a lot of it's attaction for me, but this year is starting out kind of interesting. Waltrips BIG screwup with the Toyota and Gordons' car being an inch too low are just a couple of things to watch for sure. Gordon starts at the back, but I'll bet he's up front in short order if he doesn't get taken out. Smoke is going to be a good one to watch also as he really wants Daytona bad. I always have a Daytona party with about 10 other guys, and with the weather continuing it's deepfreeze,,, there really isn't going to be a lot of things to do if you're not into winter sports. I'll bet it's going to be one of the most watched Daytonas ever.

who is smoke?

you mean like how it all started and how it used to be? I'd rather watch F1 or MotoGP. Cutting edge technology. |
. . . or the DTM, the German "NASCAR" with cars that don't resemble the showroom units either. :D
With the return of the Mustang, Charger, and possibly the Camaro . . . they could bring back the Trans-Am Cup. |
trans am would be cool!
tony still lives in indiana. colombus i think. he is the hottest favorite now. he drives like aj foyt in his youth. tom w |
*** I've GOT to WATCH it!!! ***
Being in charge of two full-powered analog and two low-power digital television stations, I've got my hands full for tomorrow.
I'm praying for no weather problems AT ALL! Hey, when the race is over, someone want to PM me about who's the winner? Just kidding. :P |
Those restrictor plates and that stupid Lucky Dog rule have got to go.
Personally I can't watch it on TV. It's nothing at all like actually being there. It is kind of amazing they can get the horsepower and speeds they do on normally aspirated engines. |
hey, man, the lucky dog rule RULES!
oh well, i don't mind that too much. just a twist for the fans. tom w |
Well that was one for the books. We were REALLY cheering Mark Martin on, but the finish by Harvick couldn't be denied. IMHO,,, one great race.
