I've spent in the neighborhood of $18,000.oo in traffic tickets, for me alone in the last 12 months. This does not include parking, and overweight tickets, and other non moving violations. Mostly all of that money went into court fees, and representation fees. Some went to tickets, and the whole thing would have been a lot more if I hadn't written my way out of atleast ten tickets. Along with not guilty plea's I sent in a lot of letters about what I was doing or what the police did wrong while issuing me the tickets, and the charges were dropped in a lot of cases.
I have no points on my drivers license to date though, and nothing pending at the moment. If you work the system you can either buy your way out, or talk your way out of almost anything at all. Most recent ticket was for 98 mph in a 55 zone in Iowa, in the tractor trailer, going up hill. I beat that one with a letter to the prosecutor, and not guilty plea. In the letter I pointed out that the officer had made a serious mistake while reading my log book, and didn't even know what she was looking at. They do this all the time, because most of them don't even know the proper log book rules. I use this a s leverage, and get out of many tickets for either speeding, or any other violations. She had made the very common mistake of not accounting for the time zones changing, as I moved west, over the day. As a result, she was under the impression I had been speeding for a lot longer, and a lot further than I actually had..or so I made it seem. Since there was a one hour difference,in my home time zone, and the one I was in. This made it look to her, as if I was going a lot faster, than I would have been. Even though she had me on Lazer at 98, in a 55 this little discrepency in her report, got me off the hook, all together, with a simple letter explaining it to the court, along with my "Not Guilty" plea. As I said, the cops do this, and make a lot of other mistakes out here, you've just gotta have a trained eye, for what you can use for leverage, when getting out of a ticket. I'm no expert obviously, because it did still become an expensive year.. but it would have been a lot more expensive, and I wouldn't have any license of any kind by now either. A recent New Jersey ticket cost me $1000.oo.( $600.oo for the Lawyer, and $400.oo to court) As a result I didn't have to show up for court, because the lawyer went for me. I also didn't get any points on my license either. The money I made, but would have lost out on that day was several times what that whole deal ended up costing me, just in the short term only. So it was definately money well spent, and totally worth it. |
