Good News, for MBZ purists?? GM to purchase Chrysler!!

I just found the following during my morning read..... copied it from www.jayski.com .....a NASCAR related website.....

GM to buy Chrysler? General Motors Corp. is in talks to buy the Chrysler Group in its entirety, Automotive News reported Friday, citing unnamed sources in Germany and the United States. The automotive trade publication reported on its Web site that high-level talks were talking place between GM and Chrysler Group parent DaimlerChrysler AG. The potential deal between the two automakers could go beyond cooperation on joint development of a large sport utility vehicle, the magazine said. A General Motors Corp. spokesman said the company routinely has discussions with other automakers but declined to comment on the Automotive News report. "We often have discussions with automakers routinely. We don't comment on speculation regarding discussions," GM spokesman Tony Cervone said. Meanwhile, various newspapers reported earlier Friday that Chrysler and GM have held discussions for about six months about a possible alliance related to large sport utility vehicles.(MSNBC)(2-16-2007)

I think its one of the best moves for american car manufacturers. One of the commentators on NPR had a very valid point. American car companies are failing because there is just WAY to many choices in the market. So much so that it its impossible for them to still be competitive. Time for consolidation!

Who is GM and what is Chrysler?

I heard that when Daimler-Benz bought the defunct Bremen Borgward factory in the early '60s, they padlocked the plant, bulldozed a huge pile of spare Borgward parts into a giant pit, and concreted it over!

when i was at the dealership yesterday looking at prices for a tranny, i over heard a guy talking to the GM about this. the GM says that mercedes has been trying to dump chrysler for a while.

I'll second that! They are very popular, mostly because they appeal to the ego and one must keep up with the Jones's, and so the market is flooded with them, but they are about the most impractical vehicle IMHO. I much prefer my nice riding benz sedan. If I need to haul something, I have an old truck as a second vehicle.:laugh2:

I can see it now. Go to your local Chevrolet Dodge Pontiac Chrysler Buick Cadillac GMC Jeep dealer for the 2011 Chrysler ILS (Also Known as the 2011 Buick PAS). It makes my head hurt.

Rumors of an alliance first appeared in Germany’s Manager-Magazin, but today’s report is the first calling for an outright acquisition. Speculation about a GM acquisition began this week, but today’s report is the first claiming to cite high-level sources. What’s more, this is the first we’ve heard of actual negotiations taking place.

Following its announcement earlier this week of a $1.3 billion loss in 2006 for the Chrysler Group, Daimler Chrysler said it would consider all possible options to rectify the situation.

"No option is being excluded in the interest of arriving at the best possible solution for the Chrysler Group and Daimler Chrysler as a whole,” the company said.

German newspapers Handelsblatt and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung said Daimler Chrysler was specifically looking at a spin-off of the Chrysler Group on the stock market. The reasoning behind such a move is to avoid the hassle of finding a company to acquire Chrysler. However, it appears GM was quick to step up to the plate.

Sounds like a desperate move to hold onto the title of “Worlds Largest Automaker” when they should be more concerned about trying to become the world’s most profitable automaker.

There will always be rumors floating around.

I think Chrysler may go the way of Studebaker and AMC, except possibly for their Jeep division. If Chrysler dissappears, I wish they could take their stupid 'cab-forward' body design with them, but it's already trickled down to other makes, including Honda.

The US and other car makers for years have really not paid too much attention to what the Japanese have been doing, especially Toyota.
They have been making cars that are comfortable, nice to look at, good on gas, safe, low maintainance, they last and aren't expensive to buy or keep up.
They all even have high end vehicles. (Lexus, Infinity etc) that are giving Me/Be, BMW, Jaguar, etc. a run for the money too.
Toyota is not far from becoming the #1 car maker in the world and all of the other companies have allowed it to happen. Especially the American companies.
Mercedes lost a big market share a few years back with poorly made electronics that caused more recalls and breakdowns (I was told this by an owner of my local Me/Be dealer) than in their history. (almost as bad as Lucas).
When I had my 80 450SL in for a new subframe (Under full warantee) they gave me a loaner car and it was a 4matic. It was the tinniest car and lightest feeling car and the tranny chain was so noisy that I left the car parked at my house and I used my SEC.
The dealer said that customers do not mind the whining in the tranny from the chain, I thought that it sucked.
If GM, Chrysler & Ford (who is down over a million units a year) paid attention to their cars, made good cars (which they are very capable of) like their Japanese competitors, they all would not be in trouble like they are today.
We as consumers do not want to lay out any of our good money and get crapped on.
I gather that is why all of us here realize that and why we all drive older vehicles (That I think are better) and most of us repair them by ourselves.
Enough venting but I hope that you get my drift.
