Parts Washer Fluid??

Hi Guys,
It's time to change the fluid in my parts washer, it's pretty nasty. Anyway, the stuff smells like kerosene, so is that what it is? The reason I'm asking is the stuff at the store is like $30 for a 5 gallon bucket and I need 10 gallons. Kerosene at the gas station is way cheaper.

If it's not kerosene, what's the best stuff to use for a good price?
Thanks!
Adam

The solvent needs to have a flash point of 143 degrees or higher. Kerosene may be cheap but if you're a DIYer, you better be v e r r y careful.

I use mineral spirits. I have no idea of its flash point or why it should be above 143. If there is any worry about fire, use a water base solvent.

Diesel fuel is a good cleaning agent and I'm sure the flash point is way up there. Maybe home heating or agricultural varieties are cheap.

Wear gloves and use good ventilation. The health hazards of mechanical work have not been adequately taught.

Know what VOC means to your health.

Kerosene, Mineral Spirits, Bio Diesel, or now there is a new low voc water based solvent that is supposed to be good. Ive even heard of people using simple green.

in my dads shop about 15 years ago we used kerosene.but about 5 yrs ago i bought a partswasher from a guy and it came with 10 gallons of new partswasher fluid.i will say one thing about it.after washing off the parts they dry lickety split, the kerosene took forever to dry and then it had a kind of film on it.you might not want to pay the price but it is worth it.whats kerosene these days 3 bucks a gallon,if so your looking at double the price.

Hmmm, decisions, decisions.... I still am not sure, any other opinions?
So far I'm between bio diesel and the expensive stuff. I am worried that bio diesel won't evaporate quick enough.
Thanks for everyones help!

I can let you try a little of my home brew bio if you want. I am not far from you in Caledonia.
