I've seen this one in the local Craigslist for a few weeks. It was at $4000 for a bit, more recently at $3700 OBO.:
http://tallahassee.craigslist.org/car/280754943.html. It caught my eye as a possible fun commuter car. For the moment, though, I think I'll stick with my W123 300D. |

wow that gti looks like it was beat a little but as said they can take it. i wouldn't offer a penny over 2k for it.. with no a/c and the ding on the rear. the hood looks kinda funky too. are u sure you want a black car in fla espec with no a/c? the engine looks ok. i would keep looking.. but '96 is a good year.

Why not take a look at a used civic or integra? I think as far as reliability/trim/finish they are far superior to the VW's, and an integra is certainly faster and more tossible as well. Is there a specific reason you are wanting a Vdub? Back when i was looking for a car to replace the SD i was looking at those as well, but opted for the acura due to reliability, gas mileage, and performance. You can find old integras for a song now too, easily under 4k.

I just bought a 1988 VW Fox for $250...199xxx miles, 4 speed manual, cold A/C, manual steering, manual everything else, chalky single stage white with tan tweed interior, skinny little 13 inch tires on steel wheels, but it can't weigh more than 1900 pounds and even with 81?hp, gets around pretty well. Cheap and cheerful transportation!

Yep, that was it...the shift linkage had come apart at the ball that the lever pivots on. I put it back together but have a hell of a time finding reverse, just because it's not adjusted right. The gearbox itself seems OK, but I don't have the adjustment tool and will probably have to pay a professional to adjust it properly. There's something compelling about REALLY basic little cars, there's nothing that can break.
