Anyone have a Golf MKIII?
I'm thinking about saving up for a used one while in college since I need something with better fuel milage, reliability, and... cheaper fuel (screw bio)

I had a '90 with a manual trans. Barely broke 20mpg. Occasional stalling between shifts were never resolved in the 3 years I owned it. I had higher expectations - especially since I bought it new, with only 10miles on the clock, so it's not like it was ruined during demo runs.

Get a Rabbit and then go crazy modding it.
Last summer we bought one of our daughters a Rabbit and I love driving it up and down Malibu Canyon road. The car stays glued to the road and hugs the curves. It is a fun, and not too expensive, ride.

Everyone at school it seems drives VW's. They are ok, never did anything for me I think they feel kind of cheap.
Why not drive the 300D?

Sounds like he wants a lighter weight car to toss around. I kind of want a BMW 2002 or even an old Miata. Driving those kind of cars is a great contrast to a big 4 door sedan and they complement each other quite well.
Though if you are looking at fun handling then go for a RWD. Makes loads of difference in the right car.

I agree. New VWs are amazing on the inside. They don't have the greatest reputation for reliability but the worst thing that's happened to my friend's 03 GTI with 40K miles is water leaking into the turn indicators mounted on the sides of the body.

That's the car I wanted, but couldn't afford, while I was in college.
Instead I had a pretty nice '72 Chevy Malibu coupe (that's the last coupe I owned until I got the 300CE).

Don, i've had abunch of Golfs over the years, from lowly 1.3 Mk2s upto a Mk3 VR6 (2.9l). The very early Mk2s (which came out here in early '92) did feature some carb'd models, and even the base models had no PS. Im not sure what engine sizes are on the US market, here we had, in Mk3 guise - 1.4,
1.6, 1.8, 2.0 (GTi) and 2.9. Diesels were just 1.9, (smome turbo'd) i think with varying outputs. They are a pretty robust car, ideal for taking 5 people (4 in comfort), or folding the back seats and throwing a pile of junk in the back. The 1.4 is weedy, 1.6 more suited, bigger again will give more fun, tho the Mk3 was a bit lardy compared to its predecessors, and if you're looking at the GTi model, personally i think theres more fun to be had elsewhere.. Mid sized engines will give you from mid 30s (mpg) upwards depending on your right foot. Timing belt will need doing around the 70k mark. Interior is hard wearing, tho maybe a bit sombre. You may get rust around the bottom of the rear windshield, where the rear wiper is located, and also the front screen may be prone to some bubbling. As a cheap knockabout tho, they're pretty decent. What kinda engines are available in the US?
