The heart of the article dealt with a family that moved from Los Angeles to Boston so their 2 daughters could attend a good school, The Winsor School. The private schools in Los Angeles didn't meet their expectations. This family moved to Boston without employment and moved into a cramped 2 bedroom apt. The money from the sale of their house in CA went towards the $54,000 tuition. It also dealt with other families that moved thousands of miles so their kids could get a good education. It seems more and more parents are moving so their kids can get an education.

That's crazy. Is the US public system really that bad?

In some areas it is.

My wife and I have spent a small fortune (equivalent to the value of our hacienda outside Havana

) to send our offsprings to private schools.

Academically, the investment will continue to yield benefits.

Socially, I am not so sure. The school they attended has a kind of rarefied air to it and the kids can get a warped view of what the real world is like.

Now that they are attending college and meeting a more diversified group of persons, my kids seem better adjusted.

But moving out of the state, or even within the state, is plain crazy (and stupid).

Reminds me of the reverse. In 1963 I passed a competitive examination and was awarded a scholarship to Bradford Boys Grammar School I was only 11yrs old and didn't understand the situation fully. My parents decided to emigrate to the US and I never attended.
A few years ago, I met a retired Biology teacher from school located not too far from Bradford (Batley Grammar School where Joseph Priestly had attended). I happened to mention to him what had happened to me. He told me that Bradford Grammar School is one of the best private schools in Britain and was shocked that I had not attended.
All these years, I had been completely unaware of the significance of this lost opportunity. When I brought it up with my parents, it was obvious they had given it virtually no thought when considering whether to emigrate or not. They barely even remembered that I was going to attend the school.
So much for valuing education.

I attended a public high school for two years, and a private school for the last two years of high school. What a difference!

Went back a few years ago for a 20 year reunion....boy, has the place changed; so much so, that I am not sure I would want to go there again. It has gotten so hoity toity, that I am starting to think that they do not live in the same world as the rest of us.

Pick your school carefully!!!

When I was thinking about my daughter's education, I had concluded that money spent on a good K-12 education was probably more important than money spent on a college education. However, I was acutely aware of the problem you describe and was very concerned about the long term consequences of those attitudes. Luckily, I did not have to face any hard decisions about it. There was a highly rated public elementary school close by and my daughter got accepted in the Denver School of the Arts starting in middle school. It's a public school with competitive entry requirements. She's in her second year. I've come to the conclusion that the best feature of the school is that all the students who attend got there as a result of a deliberate decision to apply. Nobody is there by accident. I wonder if the high quality of many private schools can be explained in the same way.

I heard something about the public school system in the Poconos of Pa. being among the best. One reason is that the county collects property taxes on all the vacation homes, which of course don't contribute to the student population. The locals thereby benefit.
