Nagin and others in hot water for illegal gun siezures.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS, MAYOR RAY NAGIN
ONCE AGAIN FOUND IN CONTEMPT OF COURT

District Court Judge to City Attorney: Conduct "wholly unprofessional"

The NRA and law-abiding gun owners won yet another victory this week against New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and former police chief Warren Riley.

Judge Carl J. Barbier, presiding over the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, granted NRA's motion for contempt against New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Warren Riley for "failure to provide initial disclosures and to compel answers to discovery" during NRA's injunction against the City for their illegal confiscation of law-abiding citizens' guns following Hurricane Katrina in 2006.

"Once more, Mayor Ray Nagin and former police chief Warren Riley are held accountable for considering themselves above the law," said NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox. "These men have had to be dragged, kicking and screaming, every step of the way in this process to return the lawfully owned firearms to their own citizens, and Judge Barbier rightly found them in contempt of court for their complete lack of respect for the rule of law."

Furthermore, Judge Barbier concluded that the delaying tactics by the City's attorney, Joseph Vincent DiRosa, Jr, were "wholly unprofessional and shall not be condoned." Mr. DiRosa admitted in Court that he had "no good reason" to explain his actions and has been ordered to pay partial legal fees to NRA's attorneys for their wasted time and money.

"Ray Nagin, Warren Riley and their attorney refused to provide vital information to the U.S. District Court for their unconstitutional acts in their city's time of great need," concluded Cox. "On behalf of the lawful gun owners of New Orleans, NRA is pleased with this outcome. We thank Judge Barbier for his swift decision and we will continue to press for the full return of all the confiscated firearms."

Even if you don't own any guns, don't want to own any, you should still support the NRA. The nation's founders knew a lot about government and about the heart of man. None of those things have changed appreciably in 200 plus years.

New Orleans politics must work a lot like DC politics.

Yes, the founding fathers were very smert men, and human nature has not changed in the last 200 years. When we start to think things have changed, and that we are smarter than they were, then start messing with crap we will be in trouble.

They wrote the 2nd ammendment in, and it will be removed over my cold dead body!

Depends on what you mean by gun control. I've never studied the history of the 2d Amendment, but it does refer to a "well regulated militia." The 2d Amendment didn't come along until several years after the Revolution, but I bet the militia back had some level of regulation.

That's one argument, itself not without controversy.

Here is more than I ever wanted to know about the 2nd Amendment: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

I like the NRA... most of the time... However, they have taken a few stupid PETA-like extremist stances in the past which I thought were counter-productive, but hey... Nobody's perfect.

Another thing that I'm not too crazy about is the fact that the NRA membership roster inherently provides quite a handy quick-reference guide to the names and contact info. of the most enthusiastic gun owners and 2nd Amendment supporters around the nation.

At first glance, this sounds great...

...Until you think about how much easier it would make it to identify and locate those folks (including you and I!), should the federal government (or a state government) ever decide to use that membership roster to go on a gun-snatching rampage, just as Nagin and company did in N'awlins.

Yes, I know that that sounds a little paranoid and "tin-foil-hat-conspiracy-theory-ish", but... After seeing what they got away with in the aftermath of Katrina, arbitrarily and boldly confiscating all those legally-owned firearms... It seems a LOT more plausible nowadays.

All they seem to need now is a good solid "national crisis" excuse, and all of a sudden the Bill of Rights is optional.

Just because you're paranoid, that doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Mike
