Flying Ice
Anyone been unlucky enough to have a sheet of ice come through their windshield?
This happened on sunday to my friend Tom's blue 300SDL. Some of you remember the car, it was at the meet at my house last september. Well he was driving on the interstate and saw the sheet fly off an explorer in front of him but he wasn't able to avoid it and it broke right through the glass and caught him in the right arm. he sped up and tried to flag down the driver of the explorer, honking and waving at him. the guy wanted nothing of it and sped up and tried to lose him. He followed for a bit but the guy jumped off on an offramp at the last second and he lost him, but not before getting a partial plate number. hopefully he will be able to track down that ******* and get his car fixed. I don't know about other states but here in maryland the police can ticket you for not removing the ice from your vehicle.

I think I heard on the news the other day that one state (MA, I believe) was passing a law to make failure to remove the ice and snow from your car a serious crime.

I saw a sheet of it fly off a 18-wheeler, sail over 4 or 5 cars, and smash on the ground. Scariest thing I've seen in a while. I stay well back from any vehicle that has ice on top.

That sucks, tough break but it could well have been worse. I could tell you a horror story about loose plumbing pipe on the expressway but it's lunchtime.

I saw something on the tube awhile back about how poorly trucks are loaded sometimes (load not balanced properly, not tied down correctly, etc.) and the resulting accidents. It was pretty grizzley as you might expect.
We have a lot of excitement in DC on the Beltway (or the "eight-lane-death-strip" as G Gordon Liddy likes to refer to it). Trucks carrying glass, gasoline, lumber and other explosives and projectiles crashing, flipping, jack-knifing, etc. and flinging their cargo everywhere.

I was driving just behind a semi in an adjacent lane a few years back when a chunk of icy snow a couple feet square blew off the trailer and landed on my hood, just in front of the cowl vents. It left a pretty good dent.
Semis with box trailers are the worst things to drive behind after a snowstorm. even if the driver gave a damn (not likely) how's he going to clean off the roof of his trailer? After a day or two of freeze/thaw, he might as well have a pile of loose paving stones up there. |

I make sure never to follow behind a semi with water dripping off the top. Seen some nasty results of that stuff flying off.
Loose crap in the bed of trucks should be added to my peeve list with left lane vigilantism. On the other hand. I do get a kick out of these minivan and SUV (some cars even) drivers that leave the snow on the roof. After a few minutes of heating the inside of the vehicle driving around town, that sheet of snow now sits on a film of water. First stoplight and it slides right off onto the windshield. WHITE-OUT!! I have to laugh at those bozos.

A bit off point, but years ago a motorist was killed when a block of ice dislodged from some part of a convention center that was being built over I-5 in downtown Seattle, and landed on his 60mph + windshield.

I roommate from college once told me about a friend of his that was nearly killed by a falling van. My roommate's friend was behind a car carrier hauling vans on an Ohio interstate. A chain broke on the van that was on the top level at the back. The van slipped back and dropped off of the carrier and on to the road just in time for my roommate's friend to hit it.

Wow that's scary. I things like that don't happen around here.
I hope the insurance is going to allow a partial search. I understood that only a FULL match was possible. The closest thing I can think of happening was seeing a 40 ft semi trailer unhook itself from the rig and slide down the freeway 100 feet in front of us. |
