I was driving down this road today in my 88 Volvo 240 and this lady had a stop sign at wich she was not going to stop at. I had to slam on my brakes. I met up with her at the light, and she called me yuppy scum and told me that I needed more patients. "yuppy scum" thats funny, I spent a lot less of my Volvo then she did on her pirus and have a car that gets 33mpg and would eat her car up in the corner. She must have had me confused with her self.

That is pretty funny.

The 240 is the quintessential, long lasting Volvo. What wonderful cars.They are what lots of people conjure when the word "Volvo" is uttered. Derived from the 140 cars, starting in 1968, they were produced for a long time, '93 were the last ones, so you have one of the late ones. They weren't fast, but if you don't mind fixing wiring harnesses and biodegradable headliners and plastic, you have a car worth running forever. Plus they are REAL comfortable and safe. But you probably knew all that, anyway.

That Prius is going to need a new battery pack one day, and that is going to cost a LOT, probably $5,000 to $7,000 - if she can find one. Plus they are flimsy, won't hold up well in a accident at all.

I agree. I'm pretty much stuck on old MB.s BMWs and Volvos not for the image but for the relible confortable safe and quality engenering that they afford. I worked at an auction company this summer and foudn that most the new cars I drove made me glad to walk back to my Old benz, Volvo or BMW that I drove that day. So much for progress. Thinking about picking up a diesiel benz next.

Also true in that this was my very first car. I have kept in contact with the previous owner of it and he had bought a newer s70. Last year he told me that he wanted to sell it and I asked him why, and he told me that it was feeling wore out at 75K. Hmm he drove the 240 to 150k. I gently rejected his offer honsetly saying that I own enough cars. He said that he was going to look for an old 2002 at this point. Shows how terrible the s70 was if was willing to go back that far.

I had a '74 Volvo 141 in the mid 80s. Ran great. I had a friend who used to always needle me with the yuppie handle. He was way hippie, had a school bus and a truck.

Then he, I, and his old lady drove back from Eastern Wa. to Seattle in it and he saw how well it tracked and handled and everything -- he changed his tune.

I never liked those 240 Volvos as much as a decent W123. The Merc interior is just so much more pleasnt. But still think they are a decent driving car, especially for an 80's car.

Friend's 240 engine blew its headgasket at 200K or so. Dunno if its that's a common thing like on a M103.

The Volvo 240 is a great car. Safe, comfortable and durable if a bit slow off the line. Also very good looking in their own, boxy way. A great example of the three-box car design.

The Prius is not going to last as long as the Volvo 240. After an initial period of hot sales, people are turning their backs on the Prius. Tax incentives have been cut back and there are no more free carpool lane "passes" available (in California) so people are not buying the Prius like they were a year ago.

Plus the Prius looks ugly.

The one thing I do like about them is how uncannily quiet they are. It is like riding in a golf cart.

the localdealers here in iowa are sold out of prius's but on the other hand alot of local used car lots have at least 1 or 2 of em.i think they are losing their luster.

I have no problem with people wanting to drive hybrids to do something about the environment. But I have a real problem with the conspicuous non-consumption aspect of it. Doesn't she see the irony here? She's rubbing her expensive car purchase in your nose, and you're driving a car that is almost 20 years old. She might as well paint "look at me and what I can afford" on the side of her car. What could be more yuppie than that?
