%&@%$&* car insurance rates!!!
Sorry, just have to vent.
I insure myself (43)...my wife (49)...and 2 sons (17-19) cars-2005 silverado 3500 diesel--2006 Hyundai--1989 Chevy Astro--1989 420SEL. 6-months premium==$3700. Full coverage only on truck and Hyundai. That is the absolute cheapest I can find (AIG). Is it just a Florida thing now or does that seem in line with the rest of the country? The big companies, State Farm, Allstate, etc. were in the $6000+ for the same coverage. |
If it's any consolation insurance for myself only on one car (my 2.5-16) was £1600 for one year - $3250.

Holy shnikies!
I'd imagine your boys are throwing you off. I've got full coverage on my '03 Odyssey, '00 Jeep TJ and my TD (mainly for glass coverage which I take advantage far too often for some reason) for myself (37) and the Mrs. (36) through Allstate and it's about $2400/yr. (I could probably do better if I tried). I'm afraid to think what it will be by the time my kids start driving. When I was 18 I had liability only on a '77 F350 4x4 and my insurance was $1800/yr. |
Check w/ an insurance broker--not a salesman from a specific company. If there is a better deal out there they will likely find it.

I remember how much I paid, even accident-free, as a teen and in my 20s. It was ridiculous. When I hit 30, the rates dropped by a fair margin. I also remember an article I read a little while ago about the most frequently stolen vehicles in the US and the top 5 were almost all trucks, so that may be affecting your rates as well. That quote doesn't seem outrageous to me, just my $0.02... |
I'm going to presume that the Hyundai is one of their smaller models. If so, smaller cars are more likely to be seriously damaged in an accident and more likely to be totalled, which doesn't bode well for the insurance company or it's policyholders. The Silverado diesel, like most pickup diesels, is a car thieves wet dream. Hopefully Chevy had the foresight to include the VATS anti-theft system on these models, which will keep away the more casual car thief. From that perspective, Ford Super Duty pickups are a trip back to the Seventie's, with just the steering column lock keeping thieves at bay. A talented 12 year old could steal one of those, and it would be in a shipping crate bound to Mexico in about 24 hours.
Anyway, If you can't get a better break on the policy cost, I would take a long hard look at the economics of swapping out the Hyundai for a medium-sized American sedan like an Taurus or Impala. Poorer fuel economy, but probably the easiest class of automobiles to insure. |

Your kids are what is causing your high rates! I have one just turned 16 and my rates really raised through the roof! A sympathetic insurance agent, told me( off the record), to buy some old junker car, whether it be running or not, and put my son as the primary driver on that car(liability only). Havent done it yet, but if I have to buy an older junker, I would just as soon be something I can drive!(lol)

I agree with everyone, it is the two teenage males on the policy that is causing the high rates. The insurance costs are high because the claims history for unmarried males under 25 is so high. I have been there myself as a teenager, youthful exuberance, inexperience, feeling invincible, and more than my share of accidents and tickets.
|
I'm 27. My rates were always pretty rediculous (not $3k rediculous, mind you) up until about 2-3 years ago. Right now I'm paying ~$600 annualy (liability on the benzo).

When I changed from Progressive to GEICO a few years ago my policy was cut nearly in half! Give them a call to see what they can do for you.
I also remember moving from MD to VA and my policy dropping $800/year. The only change to the policy was the fact that I was out of that horrible state! Glad to be permantly in VA!! |

Yeah GEICO is the bomb. When I had the VW they were far less than the competition. You should see how low they go for a 41 year old male with no tickets or accidents driving a minivan. Incredible. |
And I thought $800/year on the '81 300D was high:rolleyes:.
|
Well, I'm still waiting for that 30 yr old premium *drop*.
No tickets, no accidents, '81 + '76 MB, '87 Audi, $140/mo. I want it to be $50/mo like it is for my 80 yr old grandpa. Oh wait, per car it is! But still, I'm paying more at 31 than I did at 29. Hmmm?? |

Thanks Mistress for the liberty mutual tip. I can get it there for $6993 for 12 months. A little less than I have now, but they will go a whole year.

I'm 24 for a few more months, have the R350 (full), the 87 300D (liability) and the 82 300CD (liability) insured with Nationwide (as well as my house) and my payments up to this most recent one were $1610 every 6 months. My bill I got last week dropped to $1092 for some reason and I haven't figured out why, although I'm not complaining! My only ticket was in December 2004, so I'm assuming maybe it was the points from that went away? I could have sworn they said those stick for 3 years.

I have an 18 year old who has hit everything in sight and a 16 year old who is just getting his license, and they cost me about $6500/yr combined. The next one will be 15 in 3 months...can't wait!

The company said that as a group, we lawyers are too aggressive, too wound up, too confrontational and like to drive fast red cars. Now, anyone who knows me knows that I am none of the above. Go figure! :D |

And in California girls don't even get a break on their insurance rates, so I am hosed. I feel your pain man! |

I'm sure it wasn't that. It's jes bidness . . . |
I pay $150 a month for my cars, no collison, so $1800 per year.
Collision for someone my age, yeah that would be like another $2k-$3k on top of that!:D  Insurance companies rape you, I know people with a few accidents that pay $5k a year. |
