Why do people steal catalytic converters?
I've been trying to figure this out. I see at least two complaints a week in my school's newspaper about someone having the catalytic converter cut out of their car. It seems that simply cutting it out from under a car would render it useless, but then again why would you need a used catalytic converter?

platinum and iridium

Ever see the price on one of those things?
See what vehicle had the converter cut out, then price it. Try pricing your own...be ready for a good "sit down" when you hear the numbers... $0.02. |
Platinum!
BLING!,,,,,,,,,, Uh, BLING????? http://www.cashforconverters.com/ima..._converter.jpg Here's the problem right here. http://www.cashforconverters.com/index.shtml |

Obviously a job for the unfortunate recidivist who has exhausted all other avenues.

Someone asked "Dear Abby"
"Why would someone steal a Gideon's Bible from a hotel room?" and she replied "They must really NEED one" |
I knew the likely answer to this question, but I'm wondering what the scrap value of a cat is. Anybody know that? I have priced new ones and I wasn't sitting down until AFTER I heard the price!

Lets see, zero investment, 100% profit.

I know someone who runs a business that recyles those. He just breaks them up and sells whats left, pulls down a healthy 6 figure income.
I guess they are worth a lot of money to some. |
$40 is the local rate at the scrap yard

I know they contain platinum, but didn't figure there was enough to make stealing them feasible.
