Ours (17 year old Maytag) is starting to rock like crazy. Adjusting the feet doesn't seem to help. Does this mean bearings are shot or something?

Is this a DIY? Are there really Maytag repairmen or should we just shop for the next one?

Could be worn damper springs,loose counterweight or worn or broken plastic balance pulleys.Took off the back yet?

You can probably find all the info you'll need to repair it online.

If you have a product made by Maytag that has worked for 17 years, consider yourself lucky. Do yourself a favor, though. Don't buy anything else made by them. I bought a stove and a refrigerator made by Maytag and they were both pieces of crap.

Yes, in a prior life, I was one.

Won't do any good on a Maytag, a 17 yo model would be front serviced.

Try these things:

1. Check the self-leveling feet in the rear. Sometimes they rust-up and won't level comepletely. Rock the machine forward onto it's front and then let it drop back. That usually gets them repositioned.
   
2. If it doesn't have the leveling feet, make sure all the feet are screwed up into the base. These machines have a tendency to rock a little and, over time, the feet unscrew little by little and get too far out making it a bit wobbly on it's pins.
   
3. If your floor is wood, make sure it isn't rotted out under one of the back feet.
   
4. Open the lid and see if the basket is centered in the opening. If it is off center one of the tub springs is broken or a tub support arm is rusted out. Either way, you need to plan on buying a new washer.

It wasn't centered when I opened it. I can move the tub to center it or to any of the sides. It will stay where I put it (at least until I turn it on). It takes a little effort but not a lot.

I'd like to preserve the washing machine if possible. It does a good job of washing clothes, but it's making a hell of a banging noise on the tile floors.

I've seen this many times in recent years. They buy a company, suck it dry of assetts, and then just walk away from the dead husk of a company. Pretty short-sighted approach to business.

The front is held on with two phillips head screws that are in the front, just below the offset in the front panel, about 6" off the floor. Remove the screws, grab the bottom sides of the panel and pull it toward you, allowing it to pivot at the top, under the top cover of the machine. When the front panel is angled at about 45° it should come free from the top.

Look inside the cabinet and tell me what you see.

But we have a former Maytag Repairman here! And sorry I have to ask... Is there a website in which we can download repair manuals? I have a Maytag Washer (LAT9800AAW) and Dryer (LDG8600AAW) that are about 10 years old. The washer is sounding rough and the dryer seems to be taking longer to dry clothes on the auto setting.
