Si vas a vivir en Argentina quizas puedas aprendar un poco de Aleman.

Hay mucho Alemanes viviendo en Argentina. Mucho de ellos fueron a vivir en Argentina despues de 1945.

Buena suerte!

I can get by with conversational German, read some and understand some German TV. I took french in school, (german wasnt an option then), but then worked in Germany for a couple of years. Tho i didnt have to speak the native tongue for work purposes, and considering when i landed all i could manage was "zwei bier bitte" and "ich liebe dich" i got by ok. Those two phrases will only get you so far after all I took night classes over there, picked up some from tv, newspapers and just being in the company of locals. A little fraulein improved my technique immensely too

Basic stuff. Counting, telling time, basic conversation, basic restaurant skills, etc... tourist type stuff.

It's an informal course at UT. I've been out of college for 4 years and ain't going back

I was just about to take the advanced conversational, but now my wife wants to start learning German too. Or, needs to actually, because she was just accepted into the MFA program at UT, and *you need* German for that.

So I'm going to take the beginner conversation German a second time with the wife and work my way up.

We'll be in Germany in August (for Documenta) and may move there at some point.

Ich kann nicht es sprechen, aber ich werde ihm diesen Fall in Hochschule dauern. Für jetzt muß mich diesen Google übersetzer nur benutzen, der annehmbar ist.

Garman ist eine gemeine kühle Sprache zwar!

You see, if you go to Bavaria, the good thing about beer is, you don't have to say "Bitte"...everybody will except that.I if you really insist on asking with "please", you are clearly identified and an outlander ...Auslaender=foreigner.

The common shout would be: "Bier her ..."

There is nothing wrong with basic phrases. What kills, is the grammar and what comes along with it, like the right article for male, female and neutral.
It doesn't matter, how much you speak, just speak it right. Else they think you're a goofy ....

Is that the Google translator? Wow, that thing needs some serious brush-up.

Even though it makes clear what your intention is, the whole expression is a disaster ...

...that would be about the best you can make out of that phrase.

Oh and actually, it's not really such a "cool" language, it only sounds like it. You have more vocabulary and variations available to clearly express fine nuances ....

So it'd pretty much be no different than living here, I suppose.

Not much, just several notches up the scale, but basically the same ... but normally they are nice with tourists. They like Tourists, usually they treat them well. I would give them an upscale rating for hospitality.
Not like Italy, were they steal your socks while you're walking down the street, window-shopping.
Though, you got to give those Italians some credit for their skills, because you're not even gonna notice, until you get home and try to take your socks off...
