1985 500SEL - 60,000-Miles

Just inherited... Body - perfect, exterior paint (ugly olive green) - original/dull, chrome - okay (polishing should do the job), interior - great. Keep or sell?????? If I were to sell, any guess at its' value with such low mileage??? Is there even a market for this model?

As you can tell I'm very new to Mercedes Benz, but I really do understand its quality.

Thanks!!

You won't be able to polish the chrome.

I vote for sell, since you are not familiar with older S class cars.
The buyer will be someone who wants this car to start with, not someone who happen to stumble across it.

Unless of course you have some spare cash, and don't get frustrated easily, then you can keep it.
No, you're not going to make it much faster with little $. Yes, the sound system is blah (no, you can't just get new speakers). No, there are not alot of these around. Yes, it will get 15-17 mpg, eventough it's only a 5 liter. Lastly, no, I'm not trying to talk you into selling it so that I can buy it for cheap $

If it really is immaculate (besides the chrome), then you can try and put it on ebay with one of those outrageous price tags on it - someone may bite!

It depends on how nice it is, if all the aluminum trim is dull the rest of it can't be super mint. The sun kills the aluminum trim and everything else as well.

Is the mileage original? Any service records to back it up? I never beleive the mileage on one of these cars, the odo's break all the time.

If its really mint it might fetch $10k or so, the early W126's don't seem to comand the nose bleed prices of the later ones.

If its tired or average $3k-$5k.

Take a lot of good pictures, then throw it on ebay and see what it goes for.

Unless you want to keep it.

I was going through it this afternoon and it still has quite a bit of the original paper-work, manuals, etc... F-I-L kept everything. Yes, the miles are original & valid. As mentioned, my father-in-law drove very little, no exageration. He used to work for Mercedes and therefore kept this baby tip-top, even though he didn't drive it. A bit of a hobby keeping the car in ship-shape, no other interestes to speak of (but the TV) - with all due respect (he's a wonderful man).

I'll take a few pictures and y'all can tell me what you think... Mind you, I haven't taken it to the carwash yet so it's a bit dusty after my husband drove it the 350-miles home...

Many of us would be interested in pics of the engine compartment, and the underside of the car also. Look at the lower corners of the rear window, and see if you see any cloudiness/milkiness start to appear in the glass.

thanks!

PS: the car is starting to sound better, after your added info.

f you are serious about selling, you can send me a PM or post some more details. Like where it is located in the US...interior color/ condition- etc

You have all been such a big help... My AM walking buddy's husband owns a high-end auto body shop where he refurbishes $100,000+ classics, hot-rods and high-ends. and I took it over to him this afternoon. His detailer is going to spend 4-hours on it this Sunday buffing/detailing inside & out by hand for me. Her husband tells me the car is in fabulous condition...inside & out. Mileage legit... Since its still dusty and wheel-wells grimey, etc., I am going to hold off on posting the pics until after Sunday's bath. Please bare with me. I'm anticipating your input. As of this post it has 60,044 miles on it.

AUSTIN: Interior is seriously like new, green leather. Exterior is also an olive green... I'm located on the central coast in CA (home of the Pebble Beach Concours' de Elegance, [fascinating] million-dollar car auctions and Cherry's Jubilee). Sun-roof is primo, rubber seals are not dried out or in disrepair. Heated seats. Its really a lovely. My only concern is that I'm not classic Mercedes saavy even though its a safe & classy car. I'm truly on the bubble...

THE DON: Hand washing only... I absolutely agree.

LARRY DELOR: Bare with me on the pics... As mentioned above, I'm going to take the pics after its bath on Sunday. I'll try to get some pics of the underside the best I can. It appears the drivers side may have had a boo-boo in its early years but Brad confirms there's never been any frame or front-end damage at all. It's the passenger side rear door that appears to have had some body work... I'll take a look at the rear window in the AM and report regarding any cloudy or milky coloring around its corners (can you share what it is this clouded, or not, indicates? I'm taking all this in...its' very helpful). Thanks.

To my good fortune my friends husband is very generous with his expertise, time and assistance and a big help to me.

BTW, regarding the chrome/aluminum... It appears its dullness is just dust & grime but under it is still some nice shine.

The cloudy/milkyness that often appears in the 126 bodies is the rear window lamination separating. (rear window is two thin sheets of glass sandwiched together, with some sort of thin film inbetween) Moisture can get in (usually by way of getting past the rubber windshield seal) and make things cloudy.

You can still drive it - it's mostly an optic blemish until it obstructs your view, or you get tired of looking at it.

Hmmmm... Haven't been distracted by anything of the sort but, then again, haven't been looking for it either. I will make a point of checking it out specifically tomorrow. Many thanks...

No cloudiness seen in corners of rear window...nice & clear. At the risk of sounding like "the lights are on but nobody's home", you know what else I found going through compartments I didn't even know exsisted? First Aid kits still in their cubbies...
