we just watched the dixi chicks flic.. shut up and sing

i just picked it up an figured i might as well hear more about the interesting girl group who got in hot water for exercising their freedom of speech.

i had never really listened to any of their music before so i didn't even know what they sounded like.

they come across as very morally sound individuals who stood up for their beliefs and put their money where their mouths were.

when the country stations basically refused to play them they came back by doing completely new music which appealed to a different demographic.

it probably has not hurt them that the war is now not popular.

i think that the music which i grew into an adult with the late sixties and seventies music gained a lot by the anti war element. the beatles before they became anti war were just happy musicians meaning making happy music. the anti war lyrics gave the music depth and meaning. most of the great musicians all did anti war music. beatles, crosby, stills, nash and young; and many others.

the war(s) gave focus.

there was of course over the top patriotic feelings back then too. many slogans sound familiar today....america, love it or leave it... (convewrsely) ...draft beer not students...

anyway i enjoyed the movie.

and i think i will go buy some of their music.

tom w

BTW back then i didn't march or burn any buildings. but i was against the war in vietnam, too. as back then i didn't understand how some folks could hold it against the foot soldiers, i have a hard time seeing how folks in 2003 could call or write death threats to these girls because they dared to criticize our president.

I think it may take a while still but if things here keep going the way they have been for the last 5 years, there will be eventually an anti war movement in the US & Europe too that will compare to the anti-war mood that was necessary in the 60's and early 70's.

It's probably gonna take this younger generation a little longer than it took us to get pissed off enough at what is going on around them, to put down their X-Boxes, and to organize themselves and pick up some protest signs.

A draft might stimulate that to happen sooner.

Peace out.........

Oh well, not every female is going to be the ultimate babe. I like their music. Can you sing in harmony? And what are their politics?

I can sing in harmony, just like all the other drunk people I'm surrounded by when singing

Singers should be pleasing to the eyes if they plan on looking good on TV...

They're very outspoken, and I'm more of a quiet person. General personality conflict anyways, If it weren't for their extreme left viewpoint, I'm sure I still wouldn't like them.

Singing really tight harmony is not easy and when you can pull it off, it's one hell of a rush. I've done it a few times, I'm more of a solo singer/guit-box player but now and then... oh baby. I used to hang at a coffee shop in Seattle, now closed (RIP) it was quite the place. Had an open-mic every Monday nite, they closed the kitchen down while it was going on and told the audience they had to be quiet when the music was going on.

One night, me and a couple of other semi-regular performers were sitting at one of the tables - not a music night - and for some reason, one guy started singing the Beatles "Nowhere Man." Don't know how it happened, but me and the other guy joined in and we nailed it. I felt like the Beatles. When we were done, the whole room applauded. What a rush.

I've met some babes that were total eye-candy but virtually w/o talent. If they can really sing, I don't care what they look like as long as they are clean and make some effort to not be overly fat.

"During the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, several weeks after their Grammy success, the Dixie Chicks performed in concert in London on March 10, 2003, at the Shepherd's Bush Empire theatre in London. During this concert, the band gave a monologue to introduce their song Travelin' Soldier, during which Natalie Maines, a Texas native, was quoted by The Guardian as saying, "Just so you know, [...] we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas." Though this is the official circulation of the comment, the full text of the statement Natalie Maines made was as follows:

“ Just so you know, we’re on the good side with y’all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we’re ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." The comment angered many country music fans and was financially damaging. Following the uproar and the start of a boycott of the Dixie Chicks' music, Maines attempted to clarify matters on March 12 by saying, "I feel the President is ignoring the opinions of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world."

The statement failed to quiet her critics, and Maines issued an apology on March 14: "As a concerned American citizen, I apologize to President Bush because my remark was disrespectful. I feel that whoever holds that office should be treated with the utmost respect. We are currently in Europe and witnessing a huge anti-American sentiment as a result of the perceived rush to war. While war may remain a viable option, as a mother, I just want to see every possible alternative exhausted before children and American soldiers' lives are lost. I love my country. I am a proud American."

My impression... and I didn't study up on this... is they basically said what they felt politically and didn't think there would be any ramifications. Once there were ramifications, they sort of backtracked. (Probably recommended by their PR agent.)

I feel, along with others, that the place to make the comments was in THIS country, not in London where they felt there was a sympathetic audience.

So they spoke their beliefs where they felt those beliefs could find a sympathetic audience and help them gain popularity with their audience, and didn't expect a backlash.

My $.02.

yes, all that that you posted is in the movie.

if you have any interest you might just watch the movie.

personally i don't think where they said it makes any difference. free speech is free speech. they were in england when w decided to launch the invasion so they said it there. would they have said exactly the same thing here? i don't know.

kindof like when clinton got the bj in the oval office....folks acted all indignant as if doing it in the oval office made it EXTRA bad. to me wherever he did it, it was wrong, period. because he had made a commitment to his wife.

much of what you say is pretty true. the lead singer natalie is the one who made the statement. and niavely thought perhaps there would be no reaction. and tried to backtrack a bit when it was so bad.

and they have the luxury of selecting what they put in the movie.

but they come off as having pretty good values. for instance they all are married with children....to men. a lot of celebrities today don't bother with all that old fashoned marriage stuff.

nate, best of luck to you. i am against the war but i am for you and all the folks who have chosen to serve. i will tell you the same thing i tell all the young folks that i see who are going off to serve. be as careful as you can and don't take unneccessary chances.

two of the chics are pretty quiet personalities, like you. you wonder how in the world they came to the decision to be performers in fact. natalie is outspoken.

Hate to say it but I think they may have felt comfortable making this comment against w & his pack of liars outside the US because outside the USA they knew there would be a more agreeable audience. In the USA considering the audience type they attract they probalby would not make it out of the parking lot alive.

& I don't think there is too much "backtracking" going on. She is just explaining herself in more detail in the 2nd comment.
In the last one she is just being honest again in an apology for being disrespectful, not saying I take it all back. I didn't mean what I said....

im always amused by people who cant stand a contrary opinion. especially when it comes to the war and religion.

tells a lot about a person to dismiss a scenario simply because their mind is made up. im glad my friends are people i can agree to disagree with.
