I would like to talk about BMWs.

Anyone ever notice this, or does it just happen around here?

The front wheels on all the BMWs around here are always black with what looks like brake dust..... Does anyone else notice that?

Its a German car thing, Mercedes do it just as bad.

Ever notice how the 3 series with NJ plates always seem to drive like the biggest jerks? If someone passes you at 100mph in the break down lane in NJ its a 3 series.

No Hat, I never see any Mercedes with the black front wheels.

It seems like the people that drive the new Mercedes have to get that image of the perfect car. It seems like BMW driver dont care as much.

Or maybe its because the Mercedes Dealer will wash your car for free and the BMW dealer will not.... Who knows..

The front wheels on my E300 are noticeably darker than the rear, unless the car has been washed within the past week. But that's just because of lack of enough washing.

If you constantly stand on your brakes, your front wheels will darken pretty quickly. Perhaps these BMW drivers just really appreciate the quick stopping ability of their cars.

The Audi does it bad too. Fronts are like they were painted that way.

I get more dust on the BMW than any Merc I've ever owned. Very easy to clean M-parallel rims however.

Maybe because MB drivers clean them? Now that you mention it I think you may have a point.

New BMW's are leased with the dealer taking care of everything, so they are treated as rental's because they are. The front wheels on my aunt's X5 are black as night, and they stay that way.

I know MB's dust like crazy, they both probably use similer brake pads.

See....

A very close family friend has two BMW 7 series. He has a 2000 (i think) 750IL and a 2006 (I think) 760Li. The 760s wheels are always black. But on his 750, the wheels are spotless. I also think its because he doesnt have to pay or do any of the work on the 760.

My front bundts are black. I dont bother cleaning em anymore since the clearcoat is so shot on them anyways and they dust up within 4 days.

I too notice the dust issue...funny that y'all notice this on BMW's and MBs, but I see it on pretty much any vehicle with front disc brakes! Just depends how fastiduous the owner is about clean wheels.

I notice that the more complicated alloy designs don't get as much attention (I guess due to the degree of effort required to keep them clean).

My MBs all have chrome rims, and fortunately, each have some semblance of a 5-spoke design...easy enough to go over all of them in under 20 minutes while parked in the garage at night, as chrome is more compliant to brake dust removal than alloy. I usually go over the wheels with a soft cloth at least twice a week.

Look at the front wheels on any new mid level ford or ford truck.

The dustiest, blackest, and most brake-dust-infused wheels I see regularly are on Mercedes Benz cars. They have all other marques beat in the "grungy wheel" category. It's sometimes hard to tell where the wheel stops and the tire begins.

German brake pads are the dustiest out there due to TUV requirements for carbon/graphite content, and MB owners seem to be more likely to stick to OE pads than other vehicles, thus they stay with the dustiest pads out there.

I run AXXIS MetalMaster pads on my 535i and the brakes produce relatively little dust. The AXXIS Deluxe pads I put on my 300td have stopped the dusting, but the damage is done and the wheels are permanently grungy (at least until I paint them).
