ABC News had a story tonight about Purity Balls. They are like a prom or wedding reception to which a father takes his young daughter (12 yrs old or so). The daughter then pledges to the father that she will not have sex with anyone until she marries. One even pledged never to kiss a boy before marriage.
Did anyone else see the story and get a real creepy feeling when watching it as if there is some really sick underlying psychology involved?

Ok, I did and read about it. I'm not in favor of sexual abstinence but a girl making the pledge to her father as if the father has some special claim on her sexuality seems to hint at a the psychic roots of the idea that women are property. One wonders if the logical extension of the practice is honor killings.
I don't think it would creep me out so much if it was a mother/daughter event.

I see your point here. If she has to pledge to a man, she can easily change her allegiance from her father to anyone else. And it would seem likely that she may cling to another controlling personality, which easily leads to abuse.

This is not restricted to near-fringe movements like the Mormons. In fact, there is a large enough faction who want us to believe that it's "the way things ought to be."

I can see that side of it. But the other side is that it creates some basic sexual dependency between daughter and father that can't be broken. She then marries her father, or as a substitute, only a male that her father approves of.

I meant that I'm not in favor of abstinence until marriage.

the thing about pledging to dad is a little wierd. more appropriate to pledge to herself.

women as property opens a whole big bag of worms. as a man with four daughters, six sisters and three granddaughters (and at least one on the way). i am a women's rights man.

I have daughters and the show totally creeped me out.

I think that abstinence for young people, especially in this age of STDs, is a laudable goal. But these people are just a bit too creepy for my liking.

What about the boys?

Do they pledge virginity to their moms?
