I recently bought this car and the vin# is only 14 digits long and its a european car grey market,,why the hell cant I run this vin# and why aint it the standard 17 digits,,,,1978 450 slc amg

WHERE exactly, are you trying to run it?

Did you try the Russian Mercedes internet site? That one is free.

CARFAX doesn't do Euro VINs, and won't do anything prior to 1981....

Writing the Daimler Benz historical archives in Stuttgart will give you a complete written resopnse, be sure and write a respectful letter asking for your your response in English, and provide a photo copy of your title or proof of ownership of the vehicle with the request.

The response will take a month or so, but you will get one.

Or post up the VIN here, see if anyone else can help
