Good Vodka?

I just got another bottle of Stolichnaya Blueberry, $22 ouch. But its good stuff, what other good Vodka's are out their? I don't drink the cheap stuff anymore it kills your stomich.

Hammertime 03-17-2007 01:16 PM

If 22 bucks hurts you may not want to venture into my neck of the woods..

Kettel 1
Grey Goose
Finlandia

Alway kept in the cold dark freezer.....

I tried XO once pretty good stuff but $65 for a small bottle

IIRC, there was an article that said kollege students took cheap vodka and filtered it thru Britta's water filter after several passes, viola, smooth vodka.

Getting ready for the night ahead Hattie? ;)

I like Absolute, though I'm by no means a vodka connoisseur. I've heard a lot of good things about Grey Goose. There also seems to have been a resurgence of a lot of new premium vodka brands lately...

Ever try on e of these...

Flaming Dr. Pepper

Ingredients:
3/4 shot amaretto almond liqueur
1/4 oz 151 proof rum
1/2 glass beer

Method
1. Fill a shot glass about 3/4 full with amaretto and top it off with enough 151 proof rum to be able to burn.

2. Place the shot glass in another glass and fill the outer glass with beer (right up to the level of the shot glass).

3. Ignite the amaretto/151 and let it burn for a while. Blow it out (or leave it burning if you're brave - not recommended) and slam it. Tastes just like Dr. Pepper.

While you can spend a fortune on Vodka if you wish, I tend to stay with the mid-priced brands such as Smirnoff and Skyy. Perfectly fine for mixed drinks without any "repurcussions".

If you're going to make a Martini, then some of the premium brands are worthwhile. I prefer Finlandia, myself.

Snibble 03-17-2007 02:06 PM

Smirnoff makes me puke after drinking it in cocktails.

Some of the better vodka's are:

Bols
Finlandia
Wyborowa
Belvedere (very expensive)

The first three are the "normal" type vodka's... while the last one is a "luxury" drink

There is a lot more re-branding going on in the world of alchoholic beverages than anyone is lead to believe. Big money goes into the marketing, into the image. This is an area that demands a very critical approach.

Vodka is pure ethanol and water. Make sure it is made from " grain neutral spirits" or it may have byproducts of petroleum in it.

German Stare 03-17-2007 02:53 PM

I really like SKYY vodka. It has the fewest impurities, producing the best taste. Some so-called experts like their vodka to have a flavor, not me.
Vodka is supposed to be neutral in flavor. The word "vodka" is the diminutive of "water" in various Slavic languages (voda, woda, вода).

Grey Goose is pure image for the "trendy" crowd. Please.......................

Skyy is the best made!

If and when I buy Vodka, it is usually Skyy or Ketel 1.

Hatterasguy 03-17-2007 04:41 PM

I'll give Kettel 1 or Grey Goose a try next time around. I'm not your typical college student, I don't drink the cheap stuff. I don't buy the $8 a gallon jugs of Vodka.:D I don't drink often either, so when I do drink I try to buy the best stuff I can find.

I drank the cheap stuff once, I thought my stomich was going to explode.

iwrock 03-17-2007 04:46 PM

Skyy. I am a college student, and I buy the good stuff, as my stomach knots up on most of the low ball crap....

I have also tried that Briuta thing. It works... to a point. Its not as good as that bottle of Skyy, but it definitely improves the vodka.

Hatterasguy 03-17-2007 04:59 PM

I think for opening day in a few weeks I'll try some Rum, Captian Morgan private stock sounds good.

The only problem with Gray Goose is its French, I don't know if want to buy a French drink. My drinking buddies probably either wouldn't drink it or give me a hard time.

Don't waste your money on Grey Goose. All hype........no taste.

Hatterasguy 03-17-2007 05:12 PM

No I'll waste my buddy's money, he has a lot more then me so he can buy it.:D

Yeah I imagin its a lot of hype. I can't say I have ever had a bad drink with Skyy, Absolute etc. As long as its about $20 a bottle it seems pretty decent, its the cheap stuff that gets you.
