Free Ride???? Family or Freinds?????

How many of you have or family or friends , that think it's up to you to pay the tab when they spend time with you?

I have no respect for people that make a habit of "taking" and very seldom.. if ever to offer to pick up the tab............ " ..Deadbeats...............

I always pick up the tab when I go on a date of course I don't want her or let her pay for anything. My bros. and the few friends I do have go out and we alternate. None of us drink very much, and we just kinda randomly buy for each other. If I get up, and happen to need a beer, I'll get them all, to save them the trip. Someone else will get up a while later for something and grab a few more when they passes the bar.
Since none of us drink all that much, it all works out well. Just kinda "One hand washes the other " sorta thing with all of my friends and family. Everyone is happy, and nobody feels like they've been "Beaten"out of anything. At the end of the night.

P.S. Beer's are just an example, to explain how it works.

Yes I agree. also another good thing about it, is that everyone keeps tabs of their own money. If someone is running out it's never a big deal, and we just all kinda absorb the expense divided up. Everyone usually comes with enough money though. End of the night comes, and the tab is divided up either equally, or based on approximation of a beer count. Someone will just collect all the money, and pay with a card or something.

Had a friend that made up a sign in the car that said:

This car runs on 93 Octane fuel and not "Thank You"s.

I always like it when money does not get in the way of relationships. A bunch of fellows who know each other well just toss the necessary funds into the tab at the end of the night and nobody is out to save themselves $1.00 or two. Generous to a fault.

I recently have, unfortunately, fell into just the opposite scenario. I have several machine shops that I do business with and we typically have lunch when I'm available. I don't allow them to pay more than 1/2 the time, even though I am their customer.

Recently, and since his divorce and remarriage, one of them has taken the tact that I should pay for every lunch tab. Presumably, he has determined that I've got more capability to pay than he does..........so I should do it. This has never been stated..........it kind of evolved to this point.

So, rather than have a confrontation, I now have lunch with the other shops most of the time. The situation with this specific individual has become difficult in other ways as well.

When my gf's daughter and husband are in town, for example, it is quite well understood that we will be paying any tabs. We also choose the restaurants, which will cost approximately two to ten times of what they would choose. We make a hell of a lot more money than them.

My parental units are the same way, along with my grandparents, and a few others. I don't know why, but they insist on paying, and we always go someplace nice. I make a lot of money, more than any of them, have seen in their lifetimes probably all put together, just in the first quarter of each year. They still insist, no matter what. I think it is some sort of Maturnal thing, and makes them feel good, like they are still helping their son out, in some way. It isn't about the money for them, but something else.

Yeah it sucks not having two cents to rub together. My dad says it builds character.

For some reason I thought you were a pretty swingin' dude if your girlfriend had a husband who went out with you all to dinner =)

Wife and I don't go out to dinner much at all (money, baby...) So if we do, we pay our share and thats it. The few times we've went out with other couples - the question was never raised - we all paid our own way.

Now when I'm at work, I am in the interesting position that
a) I have an expense account
b) Sometimes, I dine with Project managers and salesdudes who offer to pay anyway
c) I am still low on the totem pole, so the only customer people I talk to are maintenance people, maybe the maintenance manager - I pay for them if they go with me but when I'm dealing with them, time is usually limited (need to start up a system quickly) so we never go anywhere at all or anywhere where the money would make a difference.

I think its important that we all keep this kinda thing in mind - if I dont keep track of things, the person I'm with might.
