Ford stops sale of F-series diesel trucks, tailpipe flames

http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070321/UPDATE/703210450/1148/rss25

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- Ford Motor Co. today told dealers to temporarily stop selling certain 2008 F-series Super Duty diesel pickups after receiving reports of flames shooting out of the vehicle's tailpipe.

Ford said it was recalling 37,400 F-Series Super Duty trucks with 6.4-liter diesel engines. The majority of the pickups _ 29,000 _ were still on dealer lots, the automaker said.

Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis said it received three reports of flames coming from the truck's tailpipe, caused by leaking fuel that ignited in the exhaust system's diesel particulate filter near the tailpipe.

"It's really something that we noticed early on and we're moving swiftly to fix the problem," Jarvis said.

There have been no injuries or vehicle fires connected to the recall. There has been one report of a grass fire in Texas that was quickly extinguished, he said.

Jarvis said the flames could only occur in engines with leaking fluids, which he said was very rare. Two of the complaints involved leaking fuel injectors and the other involved leaks coming from a crack in the turbocharger shaft.

The automaker will have dealers upgrade software for the powertrain control module, which will power down the engine under higher-than-expected temperatures in the diesel particulate filter. Similar software updates will take place at the Louisville, Ky., plant where the trucks are built.

Jarvis said the stop sale order should only last a few days as dealers reprogram the software. Owners of the remaining 8,400 trucks will be notified about the recall in early April and will be able to have the software upgrade at no charge.

In a separate action, fewer than 10,000 of the trucks will have the battery cable rerouted to avoid chafing against a shield in the engine compartment that prevents water and mud from getting into the engine.

Ford said the recall does not affect gasoline-powered pickups or those with 6.0-liter or 7.3-liter diesel engines.

Vid of the reason.

if they would have had the full comment from dan jarvis he notes that the reflash does NOT cure the original problem it is basically a bandaid.they supposedly tested the new 6.4 for over 10 million miles.you can't tell me that it didn't happen to them at least once in those 10 million miles!!

I wouldn't go back for the recall if I had one... Always wanted an exhaust flame thrower

One wonders what the temp of the exhaust system is under those circumstances. Would hate to park the ol' girl in a bed of weeds.

Or have it idling in your garage and that flamethrower igniting one wall of your house.

Guess we have a new moniker for FORD - Fire Out the Rear on Demand.

Video I watched on another site, it looked like two gigantic propane torches set on max heat, bluish orange flame - we're talking some serious temps. You could see steam coming off the asphalt as the heat evaporated the water from a recent rain.

that video is crazy, im hoping that hat wasnt thew real recall, that looked like it was added on there.
that would be pretty cool to step into it and have a ball of black smoke come out followed by a nice sized flame.

Actually this has been done before......intentionally. I remember a frat bro who rigged his '50 Ford with a sparkplug mounted into the exhaust tip. It was hot wired to a switch on the dash so he could activate it on demand.

Pretty impressive when he'd peel out and create a flame out the exhaust about 5 feet long.

HOT DAMN!

Flame throwing is old school rodding, popular in the 50's. Still see it from time to time at cruises, car shows etc.

I wonder if that engine program uses post injection. I just read a book from Bosch on new diesel injection systems and apparently some manufacturers inject diesel fuel at the end of the exhaust stroke so unburned fuel will go out in the exhaust. I will need to read that part again to understand why.

i believe the jist of it is that the fuel is injected into the exhaust and ignited to burn the particulates in the filter.and the ford was experiencing leaking injectors causing too much fuel in the system when it regenerated thus the nice flames.
