Photo radar gets pic of 147mph Hyundai Sonata

Guy gets picture taken by photo radar doing 147mph.

Interesting...

But that's not the amazing part to me.

The AMAZING thing was the car he was driving 147mph was a Hyundai Sonata. Stock V-6 model!!!!

There are plenty of EXPENSIVE sports cars that cost five times (or more) that amount that won't go that fast.

I don't know those things cost $25k these days, they are not exactly cheap anymore.

I still can't beleive a Hyundai can go that fast, wonder how it handles at that speed.

I'm pretty bias to Mercedes but when I go to NYC every month I rent a Sonata. I thought it was some piece of junk econo box when the guy handed me the keys. To my suprise it's actually a very nice car, plenty fast too. I love taking it on the turnpike with all those crazy off ramps! What fun! I wish the roads in Wisconsin were more exciting...... On second thought, all the dumb a$$es here would kill themselves not knowing what to do.

I got mine up to 120 and it felt good. I also have taken some pretty nasty turns at 70+ MPH. The tiptronic shifting is fun. I keep that thing at redline! Beet the crap out of them I do! It even has an ASR (or whatever they call it) defeat switch.

One more thing, Next time I'm out there I'll get some video and post it on youtube. There's a very nice "road course" on the Giants Statium exit.

All I ask is that you stay to the far right lane.

Uh, the point is that the photo radar is INACCURATE. The Hyundai isn't that fast. I would believe 125-130 is possible if there is no speed governor.

Considering that it's "in my neighborhood" I was thinking of blowing thru in a certain Audi which GPS tells me is good for 161 MPH. Then make a big deal out of the case when i get clocked for whatever inflated factor their computer puts in. Make the WSJ and USAT: Man goes 190 mph in 1987 sedan...

The C&D article said they got it up to 144 on flat ground so 147 going downhill is reasonable.

What is unbelievable is that he was thrown in jail for what he bargained at 102 mph... big deal 102.

I'm not too sure about that. As long as wind resistance isn't a factor the gearing on the 5 speed auto is right for reaching that speed.

This is what the article said:

"Two “certified Hyundai technicians” told one paper that the car could not go over 137 mph. Then a Hyundai official in L.A. told another paper that it could go 147 mph."

I'd believe the official over the technicians.

My Camaro Z-28 was governed at 100, same for a friends Corvette.

How do some car makers avoid putting "limiters" (chips) on their cars?

My 420SEL will do 143 mph. Book says 135 mph.

My old mechanic got tagged doing 176 about 20 years ago in a 911. Never saw the cop, the cop stumbled on him by accident. Said the guy has his gun out shaking like Barney Fife. Took it to court. Showed the judge the gear charts for a 911, max speed was 147, so OBVIOUSLY the radar was broken. Case dismissed.

A smart DA would have asked if it was the same engine that came with the car.
